Any GU baseball jersey experts? 1978-84......

My Mom is awesome. Stopped by an estate sale during lunch and saw this jersey and immediately texted me.
An hour later i hit up the ATM and brought it home for $50.
Seller tells me his buddy works the for the grounds crew at busch stadium and sold it to him for $150 back in the 80's

I don't see a size tag or anything from Rawlings.
Was wondering if anyone had something that was comparable?

Either way i'm happy to add it to my collection.

Thanks!!!

Are there any tags at all? Check inside the bottom.

It should have some marking from the equipment manager, even if just the size.

I see nothing around the collar which is unusual, but it seems when a player is new with a team, they come up with these dummy jerseys with no tags and the like. Or at least I have seen a few good certified examples like that.

I collect some GU relics, but I am not an expert by any means. Just throwing some thoughts out there. Mostly, I don't think I have ever seen a jersey without the equipment manager doing something to it....unless it was sold as a player issue or the like.

If it is a player issue jersey...again, not an expert...I would price it around $125-150.

Go to birdbats.com and check out the site and email the owner, Jeff Scott. He is an amazing guy and very helpful.

As mentioned earlier, the tags may be inside the tail.

If it is an original Hendrick gamer I would say it is more in the $400-$500 range, very popular player and Cardinals gamers of the world series team player, even if from other years, carry a premium.

I would also suggest posting it on www.jerseycentral.org - great forum for jersey freaks. Tons of info on there and I'm sure somebody will be able to help you with that one.

Nice...next thing you want to do if you have time is to try and "photo match" the jersey. Look for any pictures of Hendrick in a road uni from 1977 and try to match any imperfections, stains, whatever you can see with your jersey.

  • Nice tag...looks good. Only note I have is the Cardinals finished third in the NL East in 1977. Might not have had a chance for use???

Still VERY cool and great find. I think you owe your mom a dinner or something.

  • George didn't play for the Cards in 1977. Padres traded him on May 26, 1978 to the Cards for Eric Rasmussen.

    Makes it even more interesting.

Couple of tiny holes around the "25" on the front. Several small stains below the collar that look like either chewing tobbacco or rust.

1982 Topps i think is the first card in which he is sporting the powder blue. Several 8x10's out there though.

    Mark,
If i recall i think you live in Wichita? Found this at Central and Woodlawn.

If Hendrick was traded to the Cards in '78 and there was no #25 on the Cards at the time it wouldn't be a stretch that he wore this in '78 even though the tag is '77. One thing you might want to do is turn the jersey inside out and hold it up to a strong light. You'll be able to tell if there were any number or name changes made.

A great find by any stretch though.
