Pocket Change - 1976 missing Clad Layers Quarter

I pulled this out of my pocket last night and was glad for the light by the cash register.
Anyone know what kind of price range this 1976 Washing Quarter missing both clad layers might fall or languish in? As a collector of copper tokens and not US coins I find this piece a nice cross-over.

Thanks!

I think that is post mint damage. Looks like it was put in acid or something like that. I have found some clad coins on the beach that took on that color also. Dont know if it has something to do with the salt water or what. I just expect that whatever happened to that coin...it happened after it was minted.

Wow I just tried to post this reply using the word "salt water" except as one word. It would not let me post the message because "salt water" as one word countained a forbidden word within it. Funny stuff.

Would be lighter/thinner than a normal quarter if it is missing both cu/ni clad layers - is it? If not would be a copper plated regular coin.

Clad quarters I have found on the beach have been a light olive green color, dont think I have seen one this color.

Metal detector recovery.........Almost certain of it.
Need a Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate. If you have one for sale please PM me. Current Ebay auctions
  • I weighs out at 5.5 grams as opposed to 5.7 for a normal Bicentennial.
  • I'm pretty sure I picked this one up when I was in New Mexico a few days ago. No Salt Water out there (hope I didn't offend anyone with that reference). I'd think that environmental or intentional corrosion would have damaged the reeding too yet that looks pretty good.

I have a bucket full of clad coins that I have recovered over the years with a metal detector, and many of them look exactly like that.

A single missing clad layer drops the weight of a clad quarter to the 4.5 gram range. This is definitely
post mint damage of some type. Doesn't look like "sea water" damage.
  • Note: I've since seen another example of a 1976 Quarter missing both layers of cladding.

that looks like it is a metal detector dig and not mint damage. jmo. some quarters will look like that with being buried after some time

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
