I grew up a Dodger fan in the 60's and the replays of Russ Hodges call made me turn off the radio. But I grew into a Giants fan (go figure) and I stated to appreciate the significance of what Bobby Thomson did in 1951. I think it is the all-time #2 moment in baseball history (at least recorded baseball history) behind Jackie Robinson..

    RIP

As long as baseball is played, his hand clapping hop along the bases will be remembered.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

Thomson's HR is probably in the Top 10 in baseball history, but I wouldn't rank it over Gibson's HR in the 88 series. Giants didn't even win the series in '51, where Gibson's HR lead to the Dodgers beating the heavily favored A's. To me, that's the #2 moment in baseball history after Jackie. But as you can tell, I'm kinda biased on the issue! image

    RIP Bobby Thomson.

The Shot Heard Around The World

    "Dear Kelly,

To Try To answer your question - First of all, losing 4 to 1, last half of the ninth inning, Newcombe looking very strong in the eighth, I didn't think I would get a chance to get to bat.
When my time came to bat I told myself to get up there and "give yourself a chance to hit." I was talking myself to "wait and watch - - wait and watch" - - watch the ball of course. I also became very determined along with deep concentration.
When the pitch came I had the luck and good fortune to hit the ball out of the park.
    With my Best Wishes
    Bobby Thomson"

  • My dad was telling me about an interview he heard on the radio with Don Newcombe. It's unbelievable, but when Newcombe came out of the game and Branca assured him he'd close it out with a Dodgers victory, Newcombe hit the showers. Didn't even watch the end of the game! He said that the locker room was packed with reporters when he went into the shower, and when he came out the locker room was empty. That was how he knew something bad had happened. Can you imagine though? "Ah, it's only the ninth inning of a game which will decide the pennant. I'm feeling a bit sweaty. I'll just duck out and hear about it later..."
