Question on older gold and silver bars regarding fineness

tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
I was looking over some coin magazines admiring some of the auctions with older gold bars and something occurred to me. On a bar that is marked say 25.37 oz and a fineness of 850. Does the bar contain 25.37 oz of pure gold or is only 85% of the gold bar pure gold. I realize that due to the history of these bars the price is no where near melt but It had me curious.

  • I would say that you are looking at 25.37 total oz's with an actual pure gold weight of ( 25.37 x .850 ) 21.56 oz's.

    Keep on stack'n!!
