My Heritage Auction JOSHUA II Purchase

Well, I figure since I paid my invoice today....I can post it and add it to my set. Even though I will not be able to take my very own photos of it for a week or two.....here are the photos from Heritage.

PCGS Shows 41 in this Grade of MS 67 FB with none graded higher....although I would think a few of those 41 are re-submissions hoping for a higher grade. The 1931-D has the fourth lowest Quantity Minted (1,260,000) of the Mercury Dime Series and is considered a Semi-Key even though the 31-D was saved. I am well aware that I likely over paid for my new toy but I am ok with that since it will be in my hands for 20+ years. This will be a cornerstone of my collection for some time and I am sure to enjoy it.

    Anyone know anything about this "Complimentary copy of The Collector's Handbook" that I will be getting from Heritage? What is that?

    Edit: I just looked it up....looks like a book that I could have done without just fine. Instead of the $14.95 book, I would have preferred FREE SHIPPING on my item. GEEZ!

    Maybe it is just me.....but I want my new toy now. image Probably won't get it until late next week at the earliest it seems.....

    Getting a Joshua Merc certainly should be a corner stone coin for a Merc Collection. From the pictures you posted it looks like that coin just barely made 67. The hits and being struck from worn dies is sort of distracting. Also on the reverse the middle band sure looks weird. Its flat with a deep split. There seems to be very little if any rounding. Looks a lot like a middle band that has been worked on.

    Anyway congratulations on getting a Joshua Mercury Dime.

    Just trying to be truthfull with no candy coating from what I saw from the pictures. Heck maybe in hand its a great coin. Pictures can be deceiving both ways.

    I suspect my purchases will be better in the future. I don't plan on taking the easy road to just build your atypical average nice set with low grade keys and just 65FBs and 66FBs for the common stuff. I want to have more than that. I want to build a minimum of a top 5 set. It might take 30 years but I am young and very patient. I am also working on the real challenge of the complete variety set....I like challenges. Unlike some, I am willing to take high quality photos of my toys and put them out there for critique because that provides me with very good learning opportunities. image

    Did you see the coin in hand or have a trusted dealer do so before bidding? Are you going for a matched set? What importance does originality and eye appeal have over grade for you? Some things to think about before getting too far along.

    I saw the coin in person, and seem to recall that it was mostly a toning line. It was interesting and neutral in appearance.

    It couldn't possibly be in a 67 holder if that were a scratch. I'm going with "deceptive photo."

    Congradulations on having a Joshua II dime in your collection.

    I am lucky to have one or two myself.

    The owner helped my wife get one of my mercury dimes for my set for a gift some years age. He is a very nice caring person.

    It must be the photo because although very faint it almost looks like a cross + with two scratches to me.
