'52 Topps Wax Pack-PSA-8--$21,000!!!

man was I off on what this would go for!!

Memoray Lane's Auction ended last nite. A great pack that I thought would be a good investment at the right price--$15,000--but went for over $25,000 including the juice. WOW!!!

Ok, anyone gonna fess up on who bought it? I know several people on the board have been looking for one for quite some time.

Even at that price (assuming this is the best one out there) I think there is investment potential. Something like this transcends the pack collectors, so there are going to be guys like Olbermann and Dmitri Young with bottomless pockets that want it. I think 5x the price of an average '52 pack in decent shape is reasonable for the highest graded out there. Just like a '48 Leaf Satchel Paige PSA 9 would probably sell for $150k+ (10x a PSA 7) if one were to ever pop up.

I already ripped it and inside were a bunch of '89 Bowman cards. They were in decent shape, including a Sheffield RC, so overall I'm pleased.

I don't follow un opened pack prices but this is a bragging piece. The next sale price will eclipse this one by a long shot at some point would be my guess too. It blows my mind that a pack of cards from 1952 is not opened and in tremendous condition. That is an extremly cool item!

You would think that they would at least mention how many cards are in the pack.

That's right, how many potential PSA 6's are in a '52 pack? image .

    Simply Unbelievable.

I rechecked the back of the pack to see if it was one of the packs from the Canadian find. It does not appear to be. So gotta be 5 cards. Nonetheless...what a price.

OK Anthony, so I guess it was not you?

Nope, I don't buy from ML.

    Wow.

Back in the early 90s Murphy had this ad in SCD:

Seemed like big money back then - now - perhaps - a bargain.

Didn't BBCE have a graded pack listed for $5k or $6k about a year ago? Seems like a bargain now...
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Steve had 2 @ 6k, and one went in REA for $4500.
$5-$6k seems the going price, making these realized prices a complete abberation.
Too bad ML doesn't allow the realized prices on VCP

  • How do you know what series these packs are from? The old Murphy ad says it was from the low series, while Memory Lane has no indication. Which probably drives up the price with the potential of a high series pack. Right? Doug

not sure anyone wopuld pay extra $$--especially what this went for--hoping it was a high series pack. I agree with Anthony that this was an abberation. Will be interesting to see if others come out of the woodwork to sell now that this price has been set.

And..is it just me, or does it look terrible squished in the PSA holder?

Ml seems to have many an aberration.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • That pack was tempting, but I opted for a Strasburg 1/1 instead.

  • I remember those Mark Murphy ads in the 90's. He had some great ads for packs, modern and vintage.

Seems like you could buy them all day long in the 90's for $1,700 to $2,500. They were one of the most plentiful 50's nickel packs. Then the graded craze started, and prices started going up.

remember there was a "find" several years ago of Canadian packs. Not OPC, but packs that were only packaged in Canada and had 4 cards. If I recall correctly there were a couple of boxes. So there are a few of these out there.

Would love to know who bought it---and how much they had to drink Sat Nite.

manny, i was under the impression that the canadian topps find consisted of only 53 topps packs; did it consist of 52's too??

The '52 Topps find was from Washington state and I don't think they were Canadian Topps.
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
The Canadian find was '54 Topps packs- from what I understand there were 5 boxes, 2 of which are still be held back by the auction house, although they could've sold them since then.
The wrapper is a slightly different green (I think you pointed that out to me Dave) and held only 4 cards.
