Why are there dollar amounts imprinted on US Gov't issued bullion?

    But WHY are they on there? 90 years ago it would have made sense but these are bullion, not coins. The dollar amounts have no meaning - only the weights are meaningful.

    They are legal tender COINS. The anti-counterfeiting laws protect coins. The American Arts gold medallions issued 1980-84, which do not have face values, are not protected by those laws.

    They need a denomination since they are legal tender coins and are covered by the anti-counterfeiting laws.
