Need a quality scanner? Get the Epson V300 under $90 dlvd today!

Epson is offering a $20 discount that ends today on the Epson Perfection V300. Final cost is $79.99 ($89.94 with standard shipping).

Other members have this unit and rave about it. It also includes an in-lid adapter for slides and film scanning (great for us old folks with tons of negatives and KodaChrome slides).

Here's a link to pick up the Epson Perfection V300. Checking locally, no one carries it, so you'd probably have to order it online and most of the prices are higher than this after you get done with tax, s/h, etc...

Scott, I have one sitting in my garage right now, I bought it a few months ago and can't figure out how to get it working, so I went back to my HP. Up for a teaching lesson on how to use the Epson V300?

Correction, I just went out to the garage to bring what I thought was the Epson V300 to my office, so I could get this thing setup, but I found that I purchased the NX515, not the V300. I guess I need to order one.

I got mine for $89.95 from B&H Video... free shipping.

Amazon has it for 89.99 & ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping.

Price also fluctuates on there and it was in the $79 range a few days ago.

The great thing about this scanner is that it has technology that allows the optics to focus beyond the scanner bed. This results is clearer images of cards in PSA/SGC/BGS holders, especially thicker holders, while allowing great scans of flat images. If you don't have one, I recommend it. I've got one next to my HP Photosmart All-in-One (it provides decent scans, but the Epson blows it away) and have just begun rescanning my collection.

A penny cheaper via my link... image

Some buyers from B&H or Amazon may incur state sales tax. Amazon Super Saver Free shipping is typically a 5-10 day ground ship. B&H/Espon/BestBuy are usually 2-5 day ships. Just a heads-up...

Have you ever used it for scanning negative or slides?
  • I picked up the Epson V30 for $53 shipped. The only difference between the 300 and the 30 is that the 300 can do 35mm transparencies. I know the 300 also can scan at a higher max dpi, but if you're only scanning at 600x600 or whatever, that doesn't matter.

    Just my 2 cents.

That is on my agenda after I get some of the collection scanned. I've got several thousand slides/negatives from concerts that I took during the late 1970's and very early 1980's (Springsteen, Talking Heads, Ramones, U2, The Police, Ian Hunter, Rush, Elton John, Wings, Heart, Aerosmith, Yes, Cheap Trick, Judas Priest, Ironmaiden, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Twisted Sister, etc) that I have to dig out of storage, but I'm looking forward to it. A friend that has this has used it and says it compares to having the slides professionally converted. I still don't have any word with regard to negatives.

Sadly, my friends and I were part of the original SMFFofTS when the band was still playing clubs along the eastern shores. They had weekly stops on Staten Island (Soap Factory/Rock Factory) and NJ (Fountain Casino) and we got to know them pretty well. Nothing like their onstage personae which played great in the small venues.

I've still got all of the 45 RPM and 33 1/3 RPM band released singles and EP's from before they finally got signed in Europe in '82. I know there are a few shots of the band backstage putting on their makeup (Dee's wife Suzi - fiancee at the time - did most of the makeup and costuming for the band). She's in a few shots, too.

That would be one of the best times of the band. So raw and full of energy with the drive to take on the world. Got a handful of their audio bootlegs from that era (79/80) and a great 2 disc DVD of them at the 2001 Odyssey Disco on June 18th 1980. Great stuff.

    I have a V500 scanner and it's great.

The only thing is I found the editing tools (he said tools) a little
too hard to understand on the Epson, so I use my HP editing software, which I kept loaded on my computer, to accomplish that.

You guys will love the V300. It has that CCD device so it scans slabs
    clearly and in focus.

I hope this doesn't start another 15 threads about scanners.....
  • I just ordered a V300 from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ , $70 with free ground shipping. Can't wait to see the scans first hand.

Good call Doran. For only $69.95 shipped even I might have to get one.

I grabbed one of these and it made its way to my house on Wednesday --- played around with it last night and I can't say enough good things about it --- my old scanner was 8 years old and the Epson is 500 times better + it scans slides (I have close to 50 Gary Carter or Pat Haden slides). The quality is great and the under $100.00 price is crazy

My scanner crapped the bed so it was time for a new one. I remembered this thread and went out and got myself a new Epson V330. I love it! Best scanner I think I ever had. Those combo scanners are cheap garbage. I spent 130 + tax for this one..I know I probably could have saved a few dollars online but I wanted it today. Anyway, what a scanner! I love the noise reduction on the photo editing!

I got an HP Photosmart D110 series. I think the scans are nice. The only thing I can't figure out is sometimes I put a card on and it won't scan the entire thing or it will scan is in a strange way cutting off some of the card. Any advice? This is the first scanner I had in 10 years. I always use a camera. But now that I got back into cards, I had to get one. Anyway, here is a scan of a couple of cards. Any expertise is welcome!

Don't know about your scanner questions, but that looks like a very nice 1 for the Aaron rookie. Good eye appeal. One quick scanner tip, if you will leave the top open when you scan, you'll get the nice black background which will help the contrast of your scans.

    Mike,
Thanks for the tip. I did try that, and I still get some crazy things happening sometime. It seems like it happens with cards that have white outlines. Thanks for the comments on the Aaron. It is a nice "1".

    Thanks, Joe

  • I have an EPSON 3490 and should upgrade to the V300 sometime. The 3490 doesn't do slides any good (reguardless it's claim) and I have liked the slides results I have seen from the V300, plus figure 150 scans a day for 6 years....it has gotten it's use and is starting to be too scratched up. I have to try to avoid spots on it now. It's still kicking a little so I will likely wait till next year.

Could anyone tell me how it's photo recognition abilities are compared to previous Epson models? This is actually very important for me as the 3490, can sometimes look at a yearbook page for example and see a color photo, or a black and white photo, and every blue moon a doc. I try to trick it into doing both a color and b/w sometimes. In most cases the color is better, but every now and then the B?W will seem to fill in more of the original shot.

I have always used the color even when doing black and white pages. Reason is, there is always some level of grays in the scale of each the black and the white, no matter how black or how white they look to our eyes.

Also, I believe the V330 is just the newer version of the V300...you may not find in retail but surely you can find online. This V330 does slides AND 35mm...I dont know if the V300 does that or not. Either way, Im sure you will love it.

Even though there is no holder for super 8, I may give it a try. I have a super 8 from the associated press of 1959 and 1960 world series clips. I want to try to get some unique images of Mantle that are on there.

I havent scanned any negative, but I did scan a few positives from the 60's, relatively easily

I understand the V30 scanner is the exact same as the V300, except it doesn't have the negative holder...is that correct?
  • yankeeno7yankeeno7 Posts: 9,251 ✭✭✭
that's correct bobby...but its not just the holder, its the special backing to scan negatives/positives
  • bobbyw8469bobbyw8469 Posts: 7,139 ✭✭✭
Well...if you are just doing PSA slabbed and raw cards, I am guessing the V30 will suffice?? If that is the case, Amazon has some for $60 delivered right now. That seems like a good price to me, since I am currently scanning the an HP Scanjet G4010 (which cost me around low $100's). While sufficient, it is lacking a little bit with true deep colors....notice the red in the slab border.....Plus the colors on the card look better (sharper/crisper) than what the scan provides....I do hope I like the new Epson scanner!!!!!

picked up a V33 today at Staples

found a card I had scanned with my old HP all in one a while back

    image

then scanned the same card with the same settings I always used with my Epson all in one

    image

and then scanned it with the V33 - night and day

WOW Zep! That is one heckuva difference! A perfect example of the quality of these Epson scanners!
  • zep33zep33 Posts: 6,897 ✭✭✭
only thing I'm not liking about it is you can't scan refractors with it.

not that big a deal cause my other printer / scanner is still set up and can just be scanned with that one

I'm not a pro with these scanners and am looking to pick this up soon. I do have a question or two.

Do you guys use the factory settings or do you use something else or tweak the settings for brightness or something like that?

Is this an easy scanner to use for a less than savy user like myself?

    Thanks,

I have several hundred 1960 Topps and many sit in the holder very similar to the Mathews. Either that is typical for those cards or PSA is missing an awful lot of them.

I was using Photoshop and then importing it in using the default settings. I noticed the colors were a little less bright then the actual card. I messed with the brightness and contrast and couldn't quite get it right.

Then I tried the Epson Scan software that it came with in professional mode and it had a default gamma setting of 2.2 and 2 other choices - 1.8 or no color correction. I experimented with all 3 and the one using the gamma 2.2 was dead on to how the card actually looked.

Also got the same results with older scans by choosing "auto levels" in Photoshop.
