Wrestling VHS Tapes--What can I do with them?

I bought a collection of 1100 wrestling magazines from the late 1970s through the 1990s. The guy also had 900 VHS tapes of all the major wrestling events from the 1980s through the early 2000s. I considered buying them, but I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to sell them or copy them to DVD and then sell them because of copyright issues. Does anyone have any guidance for me on this?

Looks like you've basically answered your question in that because of the copyrights you have no rights to copy to DVD and resell.

I do know that people use torrents to distribute these types of things but you wouldn't make any money of that.

It is only a problem if you get caught.

There was a couple wrestling sites that use to trade VHS tapes, but the WWE threated to sue them and they stopped. I imagine any thing you might do to create waves would get a like response.

Is there a market for these things?

Yes, and for old football and baseball games as well. Most are illegal...but many can be found on eBay.

my neighbor deals in wrestling and roller derby tapes. There is a site he uses that he says gets much better results than ebay. Most of his sales are to Austria and Germany.

Anyone know if the NFL or MLB sell licensed DVD copies of old games? I don't think they do, but I don't understand why not. Besides from a fan's perspective, seems like an untapped revenue stream that isn't being used at all. Thousands of games are out there - how cool would it be to have decent quality and readily available footage of 50s-70s games? Other than maybe SB or WS coverage, I don't believe that I've ever seen a full game with Mantle or Gibson or Ditka or the Lombardi teams, etc. How cool would it be to have an iTunes like option for NFL or MLB games?

The NFL does. They have all the superbowls...and then about a year ago they made 3-4 disc sets for the popular teams with several games each. I dont like the NFL film versions as they cut out everything between the clock.

Sort of related...the best NFL films release is the 2005 "Pro Football Hall of Fame 85 Years of Greatness." It has bios and video of all the HOF'ers..up to 2004, with their HOF speech. 90% of them also come with a bonus disc....in an envelope wrapped with the disc set that included the 2005 (Steve Young...had to write that of course, Dan Marino).

You can find it now on eBay new for around $10...pretty good for a 4-disc set, and about 1/3 its release price. For its price I think it is a must buy.

Also, most of the later SB's can be found on eBay for around $5...the NFL film version...not bootlegged...but edited as I noted before.
