It was another great National. I got home last night absolutely exhausted, as this year seem to be more fun-filled than others. It was really great meeting/seeing so many of our board members, Bill (LSUTigers), Mike (MKnez), Kirk (MrMint23), Neil and son Raven (TheDutymon), George (Heritage) Nick (Nam812), Lee (CDsNuts), Adam (cardguy222), Scott (OTWCards) and Andy (Paleocards).
I had gone into the National looking to make some nice progress on my Musial Master Set and in that regard came away somewhat disappointed. I was able to add these to cards to my set/collection via Bruce Perry. The 63 Topps is an upgrade from my PSA 8 and the 63 Bazooka is for my personal collection. It will only grade authentic, but for $20 I couldnt pass it up, as these cards aren't the easiest to find.

As the National evolved, I began looking for some additions for my Clemente Basic Set and was able to acquire three cards that I felt had nice eye appeal. The 62 and 66 Clemente (this card is so hard to find centered and without some tilt) came courtesy of Paul Starks who was actually sharing a table with Bruce Perry, so the majority of my cards came from one table. Our very own Ron Burgundy spent some time at this table on Wednesday, but unfortunately I missed him before he left. The 63 Clemente came courtesy of Steve Hart at BBCE.

Maybe it was because the National was in Baltimore, but I have found myself lately buying Cal Ripken items. Well this was the show for anything Cal Ripken. I picked a few items for my personal Ripken collection. Unpictured is a very very nice two toned bat that I picked up from Mill Creek Sports. I enjoy buying from these guys, and almost all of my memorabilia comes from Mill Creek. The ball was a very unique piece that I had never seen before. The seller said he had gotten two of them, one he was keeping for himself and the other that I purchased. Its graded a PSA 9. Lastly, I just couldnt pass up this Ripken signed RC. In fact myself, Bobby (BPorter26) and Mike (MKnez) all picked one of these up at the same time, making it a buy under $100.

I had been contemplating spending the money to get one of my favorite football players auto's as its always something I wanted, but not until about 15 minutes before he started signing did I decide to go get a Barry Sanders Auto, and I am SO GLAD that I did. He was so personable, as we talked about him destroying my favorite football team the (Bucaneers) as he smiled when he said he LOVED playing down there in Tampa. Barry even took the time to pose for picture with you if you asked. This guy looks like he could go out and play for any team and rush for a 1000 yards today.

As mentioned above, I had a great time meeting so many members from the boards. A group of us went to Ellicott City and had dinner and drinks at Lee's place. Very cool little Tavern in the middle of Ellicott City.
Lee, Thanks Again for the hospitality! I promise not to let anyone know your actually a very nice guy, and even bought the group a round of shots and beers. It's our secret
Wanted to share this picture as well, as this was the shot from the Concierge Lounge at the Hilton where we stayed. Every morning we woke up and had breakfast with Camden Yards as our backdrop, and every evening we would return from the show, and go have beers and appetizers while watching batting practice and some of the game. For you Ravens fans, you can see Ravens Stadium in the distance behind Camden Yards.

Great times to be had at the National, I would encourage everyone to try and get to one some time in their lifetime. Can't wait for 2011 in Chicago

That's okay though, I still had an amazing weekend. I was at the show from 10:30am until 3:45pm, but spent the majority of the show in the autograph area. By the time I picked up my will call auto ticket (Ripken), and picked up my packs from BBCE, it was time for Ripken to start signing. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't have stood around for so long in the autograph area. I had ticket number 128, and I wasn't sure how long it would take to get to me, so I just stayed close. He started signing at about 12:30pm, and my number didn't get called until about 3:30pm! I did walk around and took a couple pictures. I bought my Dad an autographed (by Brooks) 8x10 from the 1970 World Series where Brooks Robinson is jumping high in the air. This thing was framed, double-matted and had a nameplate. It was only $44!! The frame-job itself was worth more than that! Besides my packs, that's all I bought.
My main objective at that show was to meet and get an autograph from Ripken. So that's what I did! Later Saturday night I went to the O's game with my wife and cousins. We had tickets for a SUITE all to ourselves! Not only that, in the suite next to us was Tippy Martinez, Davey Johnson, and Ernie Tyler "The Real Iron Man"!! There were a couple other old ball players in there, but I couldn't pinpoint their names. I didn't want to bother them by taking a picture or asking for their autograph, but it was still pretty cool.
Between getting to spend a ton of time with my family (which very rarely happens), and getting to meet Cal Ripken Jr., this was one unforgettable weekend!!
My wife's sister lives outside of Chicago, so she's okay with going next year. It'll be my first.
<< <i>I heard you picked up a blazing 64 Clemente as well; no scan of that? But seriously, all those Clemente's look bumpable. Nice pickups. >>
They paid the check already Lee, you can stop being nice now.

I did indeed meet with Joe Orlando at the show and showed him my card. He was quite perplexed as to its grade as well so he took the card at N/C to me back to the graders and had them inspect it. After about 3 or 4 minutes he returned and explained to me that under magnification there is a very small hit upper right corner on the card, plus as mentioned before he pointed the print defects around Clemente's face. He told me its a card that really could go either way, and then asked me if I was going to be in Chicago later this year, as he would personally take the card again at N/C to me and try to get it bumped. He indicated that the hit to the corner the print dots around his face combined is whats keeping it out of a PSA 7.5 or PSA 8 holder. He actually indicated that if the print defects weren't near Clemente's face, and somewhere else, the card would surely bump to a PSA 7.5. I guess I keep trying to get that bump. Joe O was very cool about the entire situation, and per him sounded like its something I should just stay after and eventually it might end up in where I think it should be, a PSA 7.5 holder.
Thanks for the brilliant recap of the Show! It's the best re-cap I've seen. It looks like Barry gave you a rather firm handshakel there. Congratulations on your pickups. We should have looked up each other while we were both there.
Best wishes.
That's the nicest PSA 7 Clemente RC I've ever seen.
Hopefully in Nov. you can get the 'right grader' to have it
bumped. Not all graders grade the same way. I would keep
trying to get it bumped, it clearly looks like it deserves it. It's
certainly no slider.
I think Joe O. is pretty sincere when he takes a look at people's
cards at the shows. Being that he was a collector once too. He seems to appreciate quality vintage items.
Thanks for the nice recap on the show.
<< <i>Matt...nice stuff there. What ever happened with your 55 that you were going to have PSA look at hoping for an upgrade?

Matt,
Are you thinking of cracking it and resubbing? Or just taking it in for review?

I never understand when a reason is given that there is a minor touch to a corner or minor print marks......Yes, a minor touch is why there would be no 9; but we are talking about a 7.5 or 8. They are being very tough on you. Although, Joe is giving you a chance. Good luck and be patient.

I'm not cracking the card, I have the nads for that. I will keep trying to review it.

That was the basis of my arguement exactly. Its a PSA 7 card, there are supposed to be imperfections.
