Coins of Britain's King Edward VIII

Edward VIII became King of England in early 1936 and abdicated late that year, because:
1. He gave up the throne for the woman he loved.
or
2. He was a Nazi agent or pro-Fascist or pro-American or something like that.
3. He wanted Winston Churchill to stop throwing his false teeth at him.
4. He knew too much about UFO's.
5. He didn't like his profile on coins.

Some British territories did issue coins with his name on them but no portraits.

All of the coins have holes in them.

I'm sure that means something.

I think the INS of Kutch issued a coin in Edward's name but in whatever alphabet they use there - it would have been made in 1936 only of course, and it doesn't have a hole in it.

And then there is the famous 3d coin dated 1937 that a few of slipped into circulation somehow.

And unfortunately all the fantasy pieces.

  • I believe the reason they coins were allowed to circulate is because they don't have a bust on them, if they had they would have been re-melted along with all the other Edward VIII coinage. And as to the hole, when you live in darkest Africa and don't have pockets it's somewhere to keep your length of string.
