Here is two right in that area. First the coin Broker located across from the Stanford campus in the Town & Country village. Then a couple miles south on El Camino is Treasure Island coins 3703 El Camino.
I grew up in Palo Alto and the town and country coin shop is your best bet. The owner is a super nice guy, and the girl he has working for him knows nothing about coins, but she sure is not hard to look at.... Have fun....
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
There's Mish International Monetary at 1154 University Drive, Menlo Park, CA 94025, (650) 328-6222. Menlo Park is next door to Palo Alto.
Robert Mish is an accomplished numismatist. His stuff is rather high end, IIRC...been more than five years since I last dropped by. Lots of darkside but plenty of nice US coins. Website says open 10-5 M-F. Lance.
The two shops aforementioned are the two existing shops in Palo Alto.
Personally I do not visit either shop on a regular basis and I have deep distrust for one of them. About a decade ago when I wasn't involved in the industry professionally I brough in an 1884-CC in NGC MS65 for an informal appraisal. The shop owner offered me $15 for it, claiming that NGC was "not a real company".
Of course, different people will have differing experiences.

Treasure Island Stamp & Coins appears to be temporarily or permanently closed. I tried Coin Broker. Crazyhoundog got it right. The woman working behind the counter was nice but knew absolutely nothing about coins. I saw a couple of interesting coins. A PCGS PF64 1941 Walker. It was bright and haze free but a little high priced. The other interesting coin was a 1926D SLQ with a nice die crack and small cud I think. It was PCGS MS64 in a rattler. I don't collect these, but I know my dad needs an upgrade for his. It was a little higher grade than his set so I passed on it. I have no idea if the die crack/cud would add to the value of this coin.
