How long before mail is considered "Lost?" (update, package resurfaces after 2 weeks in l

I sold a card on Ebay a few weeks ago, and the buyer emailed me today saying that he never got his card. I sent it with DC, so I checked and it's last status update was from 7/21, "Processed through Sort Facility."

How long before I should count this as being lost?

  • Chances are the PO will tell you give it a little more time. You can ask them to check the DC# for you since they have a little more info available to them that as a customer you do not see.
  • I have been told as long as 28 days but I believe it takes 21 before you can file a claim.

There is a chance to that the carrier did not scan the item on delivery and the buyer caught that and is just saying that knowing he will get his money back.

around chicago its usually 10 years. thats because of all the case of postal carriers taking the mail they are suppose to deliver to their home and just storing it there instead of delivering it.

30 days according to the PO...not saying yr buyer is dishonest, but if the mailman forgot to scan the package upon delivery, it's a free card...hopefully you purchased ins if it was worth anything significant.

    That's hilarious!
Reminds me of an instance here a few years back at Christmas time when a UPS driver, apparently stressed over the quantity of holiday packages, was caught throwing them into the river!

Looks like the package was taken from California to New Jersey by bike, but at least it turned up again.

Recently had a piece of mail just disappear into the void as well.

DIRECTV payment (money order), like always sent two weeks before it's due. Get an email from them that payment was late. Called and they were like we don't care you've got 7 days to get payment to us. Call the PO. They didn't care either. Complained about several instances of mail not getting to our house (most recent being a light bill that didn't arrive but we're not the only ones in our small town that didn't get their bill) blah, blah blah not our fault.

Option was to make a stop payment and that was going to cost $35. Not happy about that so in the meantime I scanned the receipt that I had from the bank and sent that to DIRECTV. Day before we are ready to do the stop payment I check our online account on the DIRECTV site and it shows payment arrived on that Sunday after I had sent proof of sending the payment. Hmmm?

Not sure what all happened there but we did check up on several other payments sent on the same day and everyone else had received them so we're thinking either it really had gotten slowed down in the system or DIRECTV was just claiming it hadn't got there in hopes we sent up automatic payments because pretty funny how it was received on a Sunday after proof was sent.
  • Just in the last week I have had 3 packages go way out of route before getting to destination. One was shipped from about 3 hours away here in PA and went out to Chicago before getting back to me here in PA. Another I mailed here in PA to Baltimore and went to Jacksonville FL before making it MD. Maybe the Post Office would not be losing so much money if they were not shooting themselves in the foot with the extra miles.
