The more I think about this, the more I believe I will find myself dealing with Mike rather than Whitlow. That's no knock on Larry and his new associate. Rather, IMHO and as far as it relates to my collection, Mike Printz WAS Whitlow, to me, for as long as I've dealt with Whitlow. Whenever I bought a coin, whenever I sold one, I spoke with Mike.
Essentially, for me, It was "Mike Printz Numismatics" with Larry as Mike's associate and not the other way around, again IMHO.
Without Mike there, I doubt I'll be spending much time, if any at all, come the next Baltimore show at table #6XX (whatever Whitlow's number is, in the back).
I'll be looking for where "Mike Printz Numismatics" or whatever Mike calls his new company instead.

If Larry Whitlow posts here, I don't recall having seem him do so. So, I would not read anything in to his not having wished Mike good luck in this thread.
What a canned statement Joe! First you say pretty much he is crazy for venturing out when the "headwinds' are strong. Then you discuss how "things are back to normal" (if this was planned, why wouldn't it be biz as usual?). Sure Larry is disappointed in recent events-I think there is something you are not telling us about this split.
I stopped dealing w/these guys a while ago. Larry seemed more interested in moderns and Mike couldn't find squat.
Before I even think of dealing with Mike or Whitlow again, I want to know who was unfair to whom.
I think we have too many headwinds in the rare coin business, and probably two or three tough years ahead of us, especially if this 1099 provision doesn't go away.
Joe - Besides the 1099 nonsense, what are your primary concerns for the next few years?

DaveE - Why does it matter? If they have a coin you want at a fair price and you knew someone was unfair to the other, would you not buy the coin??? Don't read that anyone was unfair...why can't a break up be mutually beneficial? Maybe it is good for both parties?
What you are asking for, if there is anything there, is their own personal business not anyone elses.
In any case, Mike will be at my table at the ANA Table 1622 Mike is working to get his website up and running, and should have it ready in the next couple of weeks with some phenomenal inventory.

I know Mike and Larry and consider myself a friend of both.......whatever the reason Mike decided to leave Whitlow, LTD is strickly Mike and Larry's business and no one else's (unless they care to share that info privately).....and any speculation as to the reason why should not be aired on a public forum in my opinion especially from anyone other than Mike or Larry. Both are great people and a asset to the numismatic community so let's give them the respect they deserve...............
<< <i>I too wish Mike good luck in his new venture, as I expect he'll need it. I think we have too many headwinds in the rare coin business, and probably two or three tough years ahead of us, especially if this 1099 provision doesn't go away.
However, while you're congratulating Mike, let's keep one thought in mind. Larry Whitlow is a well accomplished professional numismatist, and among the best of his generation. Some of the comments here have been highly disrespectful of Larry, which is unfortunate. Larry doesn't post here, but if he did, I'm guessing that he would express his disappointment in the recent events.
Mike left Larry's employment last Wednesday morning of his own choosing to start a new company, something that he has been planning for quite a while. There's nothing wrong with that, as it's just the evolution of business.
Things are now back to normal at Larry Whitlow's office, as we're buying and selling coins and taking care of customers. I'll be sharing a table with Larry at the ANA. Stop by and say hello as we'll have some absolute monster coins. I, too look forward to seeing what Mike has for sale, as I am a very aggressive buyer. >>
For the record, it is my understanding that Mike had not been planning to leave. And for those who know him and/or are interested, I suggest you contact him to discuss it with him directly.
Come on guys Mark/Joe, lets keep this civil and by civil I mean stop bickering. I am sure you both know what happened and this is not the place to argue about it seeing as you are not going to give details.
Guys....this thread or this board is not about private business matters. This is turning into the National Enquirer, and it should not be.
If you have opinions, express them, but until the principals decide to air their private matters (and neither of them will, because they are private) then let's move on and talk about what this thread was intended to be.....

In the internet age, secrets do not last long. I wish both luck, the story of how the split occured should not really matter to anyone. But just to be on the safe side i would not front any cash waiting for coins.

Why are you again attempting to start this discussion? It's really none of your business. My account is first hand, not revisionist history. If Mike is one of your "favorite dealers" as you say, then it's time for you to leave this alone and move along. >>
"Again attempting to start this discussion", Joe? Please show me where I attempted it the first time?
And I didn't start it this time, either. I replied to your post, which I took as a shot at Mike. And there is obviously another "first hand" side to the story.

If that is true Mike was not planning to leave, and based upon the fact there are no well wishes from Larry makes me wonder again. I do trust what Mark says.
I'd like to deal with Printz, but if it was not a friendly split and if he possibly took sensative information-like customer names, etc, then I do not want any part of him. I do hope this is not the case.
Its not so much the issue of being nosey. This entire time I felt something was not right.
I was told via a few dealers that until now, O Conner was dumping his customers out of coins. Its amazing how the winds blow.
I have bought coins from both Mike and Joe in the past and will continue to do so. I have numismatic respect for both guys. It is as simple as that. The politics around this is entertaining, but sad. Most relationships go south after a while. Time to move on.
