How Rare Is The 1948 -49 Leaf Satchel Page?

Just read an article in SCD that states that there are about 60 or so known Honus Wagner cards in the hobby. If you look at the pop on Paige, there have only been 112 cards ever graded in PSA. This was a very hard card to find. There are 3 on Ebay right now and they are overpriced or are they? Has anyone heard of any finds of this card? This may be one of the rarest post war cards ever.

I don't think it's rare by any means nor is it scarce.

3 on ebay at this time should tell us something.

It is a difficult card to find in high grade though, but I'm thinking in lower grades it can be found.

All 1949 Leaf short-prints are scarce, none are rare. If you only look at PSA population reports, it would like like there are twice as many Paige cards as most other SPs, but that's only because being the most valuable card in the set, more have been submitted (and resubmitted).

The only recent actual auction sales I have record of in my mark-up copy of the Standard Catalog is $3,259 for an SGC or PSA Fair and $5,036 for a VG-EX, about in the ballpark with current "book" value of $17,500 NM; $7,000 EX and $3,500 VG.

My notes tell me that most other 1949 Leafs, both regulars and SP, are NOT holding their value relative to pricing in the 2010 Standard Catalog.

Not so sure Steve- it's really tough to find.
By rights it shouldn't be any tougher than any other short print (which means tough, but not impossible) but when Rosen found 2 unopened boxes of Leaf short prints I think he wrote he didn't get one Paige- and got 3-4 of others. Probably just means that the next box at 6 Paiges, but a couple of boxes is a pretty big sample size.
When you figure you've got HOF collectors after it (he's only got 3 cards- Leaf, '49 Bowman and '53 Topps), HOF rookie collectors, and those collecting this set it makes for a very high demand card. Couple in the horrible centering and registration in this set and it's certainly the most expensive example, especially in higher grade.
As far as rarest post war cards, not sure I'd put it in the top 30.
    Scarcer cards-
    any '61 Dice game
    any '55 Topps stamps
    any '70 Topps cloth
    any of the 3 '60 Fleer #80
    '63 Pepsi Bateman
'51 Topps Current All Stars Stanky, Roberts or Konstanty
any '58 Hires Test with tabs

but as we've seen with the Wagner, rarity doesn't always equal value. There are tons of cards much, much rarer the Wagner, but most certainly none of them approach the value.

I really don't think the 2 cards I could find listed on ebay are that far out of range, and both have best offer options attached, so there may be some wiggle room.

Didn't Wayne Varner has the Paige in GAI 10 a few years ago? I think he wanted $75K.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

I think Varner had a GAI 10 1949 Bowman. He had a ton of very high grade GAI cards---Not sure how I feel about that as I don't here their name mentioned ever. There was a time when they had 9.5's galore.

In regards to the Leaf Paige: One of the most significant cards ever made in my opinion. That card is super tough. As to 3 being on EBAY... they are way overpriced. I would say if decently priced they would sell like hotcakes.

Wayne did have the GAI 10 '49 Bowman. I'm pretty sure it was bumped from a PSA 9.
That was back about '04 when it looked like GAI was going to really get going, and the rumours of them taking over SGC were pretty rampant.
Suffice to say a lot has changed in 6 years.

But, Anthony, Joe Orlando calls it "arguably, the toughest post-war card in the hobby".

    and published to that effect:

    Linky-Doo

    So it must be right
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I saw that a sgc 20 fair sold for 2450.00 about a month ago. I think lower grade examples are a bit underpriced from book. Besides those 2 on Ebay, they dont seem to come up too often.
