Opinions on this '61 Aaron

Does this card look like an 8 to you guys? Maybe it's me, but the corners (esp the lower 2) seem soft for an 8.

I know it is a little hard to tell with the white background, but this is the only scan I have.

Let me know what you think. Overgraded, undergraded, or about right?

Thanks.

    Mike,

Boy, maybe it's the scan or the white background but the bottom two corners do look soft. Doesn't look like an 8 to me. Is this one of the Aarons you just bought or looking to buy?

Nice card with great centering. The bottom corners do look a little soft for an 8 however I have some cards that appear nicer in hand than in a scan. Perhaps this is similar however I would probably pass at PSA 8 pricing.

This is one I am looking at. I like the centering, but the corner quality is not all that great. It is hard to tell from the scan on here, but the top 2 corners aren't much better. From what I can tell, this looks more like a 6 or 6.5 than an 8. Probably not worth it at 8 money, just like Ralph said.
  • NM-MT 8: Near Mint-Mint.

A PSA NM-MT 8 is a super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the card can exhibit the following: a very slight wax stain on reverse, slightest fraying at one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection, and/or slightly off-white borders. Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.
    NM 7: Near Mint.

A PSA NM 7 is a card with just a slight surface wear visible upon close inspection. There may be slight fraying on some corners. Picture focus may be slightly out-of-register. A minor printing blemish is acceptable. Slight wax staining is acceptable on the back of the card only. Most of the original gloss is retained. Centering must be approximately 70/30 to 75/25 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back.

From the scan it really looks weak for an 8. I would call the bottom two corners more than the "slightest fraying". I would give it a 7 based on the centering and how the top corners look.

Scans often distort corners. Oversized scans with white on white also tend to make the corners look softer. Over the years I've even had colored bordered cards that were 10's with perfect corners, only to create scans that showed white on the corners. In the hand, it probably looks a lot different.

I'm assuming this scan is from a listing and not a card in your possession.

    Mike,
Those bottom two corners look almost rounded. I'd pass on that card.

    I don't like it Mike.

On the grading side - just think - the grader walks in and sits down to start the day - let's say he/she feels good - had a good nite's rest....

Now - the first few hours are going great - they're "on top of their game...."

Now it's 6 hours later - lunch sucked - the AC isn't working as well as it could - the cards just don't look same at that point in the day.

Personally, I think I could pass on the job.

Overgraded card, not so unusual in an older holder.

    Steve,
What an opportunity to bust your balls; but I will pass. It's probably a 6.5 at best.

  • I see what you're seeing on the corners. I'm not a big corners guy myself, so that wouldn't necessarily kill the card for me. The centering is excellent, but the front overall also looks a bit worn for a PSA 8, though I'm not too familiar with the '61 set.

FYI, VCP Average on the card in PSA 8 is $222, and it's $103 in PSA 7. Unless you're a registry nut and/or you can talk the seller way down from his list price (AND you're comfortable with his couple negs), I'd hold off. You can probably find a nicer-looking PSA 7 and pay $120-$130 for it.
