My First NASCAR Race - Ticket Stub - 50 Years Ago

The ticket stub from the first Nascar race I ever saw. I was in the 5th grade and a first year band student. Our high school band was invited to Darlington to play "The Star Spangled Banner," "Dixie," and "In My Merry Oldsmobile." The band director took all band students that he had uniforms for to make the band look bigger. He told the first year students if we couldn't keep up to fake it. The race had a rain delay and had to be finished the next Saturday. I didn't get to go back the next week but we listened on the radio. If I remember correctly, Fireball Roberts won the race. The reason the ticket is in such bad shape, I carried it in my wallet for years.

Personal memorabilia is way more special than purchased memorabilia. Thanks for sharing Ron.

That's cool. Wonder if there's any footage of it anywhere in some Nascar archive

I was watching Nascar Classics on some channel or the other a couple of years a go and saw some highlights from this race. I was maybe 11 years old then and didn't remember a lot about the race we saw. I do remember I didn't have a clue about what was happening at the race but in the later 60's NASCAR became an obsession. I have since lost interest in it and will watch a few laps from time to time.

I love the NASCAR of the 50's and 60's. Even though I never saw a race in person until 1986, I wish I could have seen guys like Fireball Roberts, Joe Weatherly, Tim Flock and Curtis Turner race. After Richard Petty, Fireball is my next favorite driver of all time.

    Very cool personal memorabilia Ron
