Bank funding vs. credit card vs. Echeck

For some reason this morning when I was trying to PAY for an ebay auction I won, it appears that the $ isn't coming out of the checking account that I have linked with paypal. Odd.. And its giving me an option to use a credit card or Echeck. There is plenty of $ in the bank account, but for some reason that "choice" of payment types is greyed out and its forcing me to choose between the credit card and Echeck. I've heard that sellers get dinged $5 if I use Echeck so I don't want to use that, but I also think that I get dinged if I pay with credit card funding. Any advice? I have no idea why the bank account option isn't working.

Is your bank account a debit card? If so, did it expire? I just got a new one a few months ago and had to update it before I could pay with it.

No real answer, just a guess and a personal experience.

No, not a debit. You actually give paypal your bank account number, not a debit account number.

  • Sellers have to pay fees on all payments they recieve. There is no 5.00 charge for taking an e-check. Echecks just take 3 to 4 days before the sellers get their money.

I had this happen a few days ago. I could not pay the normal way and I had to pay via echeck. Twice. Then the next day I went to pay and everything was the way it usually is. No clue.

I've had the same thing, it may have to do with a sellers limits. There is a dealer that is a good friend of mine, and sometimes it only allows echecks to him. He's never had any problems, 100% pos feedback, and been in business for 20 years. But it still opts to that at odd times, regardless of the size of the purchase.

paypal fees are the same but echeck fees have a max. of $5. so basically around a $200 and over or so a seller would pay less on an echeck than other payments.

ive had that happen a long time ago, it was because the dollar amount was so high Paypal wanted 'instant payment' from me (ie a c/c the can charge, or the security of a echeck), never happened again though and I've since paid for much higher $ items, not sure if any of that applies to your situation though...

Interesting.. Thanks for the thoughts. If echeck doesn't mean a higher fee for seller, then I'm just going to use that for everything until the bank option becomes available again. It was not a super high $ item, the total was about $125.
