OK, inspired and prompted by a thread here this past week regarding the Alaska Mint, I acquired the below piece. Although, rather than a "gold piece" as such, it is more accurately described as a minted piece with "a piece of gold."
Whoever came up with the clever idea to actually place a gold nugget in the gold panner's pan deserves credit.

@Pickwickjr Looks like you have a nice 1854 LD double eagle. OGH labels didn't indicate Large Date or Small Date, and the LD variety represents only about 10% of 1854 double eagles. Congratulations!

Im going to run it through cac soon. I think it has a very good chance in my opinion. If it doesn’t I’m still ok with it. She looks better than most and she’s crusty. I feel I was lucky to purchase her. It looks so much better in hand than the photos show.
Thanks for your feedback

The Mexican holiday "Cinco de Mayo" celebrates the Mexican Army victory over the invading French Army at Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Mexico, Eight Escudos 1862, Durango Mint, Hand on Book style
Gold, 37mm, 26.95gm
The coin has circulated quite a bit as evidenced by it's wear and scratches and is interesting to speculate where it has been since 1862.

Sure am glad gold doesn’t stop for a weekend. I’d have withdrawals and more available liquid assets, i.e., cash.

I’m doing a type set whenever my funds will allow it. I’m not going overboard but plugging along.
Happy hunting 😊
I know not many like this modern junk......but, gold is gold.

That is a stunning Eagle! What grade?
My gold half eagle
I agree with the grade 100%. This is one you can’t grade from photos.
A coincidence but I also have an 1898-S $20 coin:

Supposedly Alaska and the Klondike supplied the gold for these coins.
