    Thanks for the link Buffalode.

    That think looks HUGE.
    Gotta get me some.

  • Any time, glad to help. It really does look huge. The same diameter as a hockey puck at 3" but it sure looks bigger. I'm still undecided about buying until I see what the price is going to be. Maybe buy one just to have one if they are high, but I really just don't know yet.

Excellent link. Thanks for that update. Looks like they have worked out the issues and these look like something I made add to the stack depending on pricing. Sounds like we should hear soon. I am surprised it has been so quite.

Funny you should ask, I found this article the other day (basically they should be out "any day now").

    Good links, guys! Thanks!

Somehow, I had it in my head that the program was only 5-6 years, but it sure does look like a 10 year program. That's alot of silver if you like buying multiples!

Problems were encountered in initially striking the bullion coins according to previous comments from the Mint. Those problems are undoubtedly due to several factors.

The first of those factors is the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin's massive size. The authorizing law dictates that each be struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver to a diameter of three inches. These large strikes are much bigger than any other coin typically produced by the Mint. For reference, the One Ounce Silver American Eagle Bullion Coin only has a diameter of 1.598 inches making the new strikes almost twice as big.

Second, the Mint is required to edge incuse the coin's fineness and weight. This proved to be problematic and test strikes resulted in a "crumpled effect."

Finally, in order to strike the new coins, the Mint had to invest $2.2 million in a new Graebener coining press. As with all new equipment, its setup and initial test runs undoubtedly added time to the mix.

Still, the Mint indicates that it will be striking the new America the Beautiful Bullion Coins in the third quarter of the year (July, August and September) and should begin releasing them in intervals so as to insure they have been made available by years end as is required by the authorizing law. Following years should see a more expanded window of striking and release as the Mint would have most of the kinks worked out by then.

It would be cool to get your hands on one of the "crumpled" test strikes... I wonder if any will find their way to collectors of that
    type of thing?
  • It has been a while since I read it but I am pretty sure the legislation gives the Treasury Secretary authority to do a whole second round of this program "at his discretion". I wouldn't think that would be likely but it wouldn't surprise me either.

Edited to clarify by this program I mean the whole ATB series, all variations.

I'm hoping the original price isn't outrageuos. I'm only interested in owning the Mt. Hood piece as a "neat piece of bullion"
I look at Mt. Hood every day living here in Portland, OR.

I also hope they are reasonable. I wouldn't mind having a couple. I drove through Portland today and even though it was pretty hazy, Mt. Hood still looked awesome.
