  • That is the same thing that happened to a card I was watching. Listed at 35 didn't sell. Dropped to 25 then sold for 65.

Eh, I've had that happen. List a card on a BIN and it doesn't sell, drop the price and auction it and it sells for more than the list price. Doesn't happen often, but it's not unheard of.

  • Not everyone visits ebay daily/weekly. I am one of those who have bought a card for far more than it went for unsold.

  • Last year I listed a HUGE Xbox 360 bundle package with tons of games and extra controllers. I originally listed it on ebay for 400.00 BIN W/ Best Offer. The auction closed with no sale and not even a single offer. I then relisted it for 300.00 BIN without a Best Offer option. Again, it did not sell. Then I listed it open auction style for .99, and it closed at 420.00. Crazy
  • I have had that happen to me a few times on ebay. It only takes 2 people wanting something at the same time to drive the price up.
  • It's the psychology of auctions and it's why sellers can set hidden reserves. If a rare item is listed at $100, those interested aren't really sure if that's a fair price or not, so no one wants to potentially overbid. When it's relisted at $75, the same thing happens. When it's listed at $50, I'm sure that's a good price (or at least an amount I'm willing to risk), so I bid $50. That sends the signal to everyone else that $50 is a reasonable price, so $55 isn't really that much out of line. If $55 isn't out of line, neither is $60. Then $65, then $70. And the next thing you know, the item is closing over $100. It all comes down to bidders sending signals about what an appropriate price is.

keep your eye on the watch........back and forth......back and forth......back and forth......you are getting VERRRRRY sleepy.......relax your mind, watch the watch.......close your eyes, breath deeply and listen: the next time you hear the words "want that" echoing through the shallow graveyard that is your mind, you will be compelled to bid irrationally on the next thing you see, even if it is a Beanie Baby or a used car part for an Izusu you owned 17 years ago......keep your eye on the watch, back and forth, back and forth......the next time your wife says, "Have you looked at the credit card statement?", you will snap out of this trance and be saved until you hear that echo.......again.

JTB is correct. Many bidders assume the other bidders know what the card is worth and are fine with paying one bid more. There was no guidance or pressure to hit the $75 or $100 BIN but they have no problem bidding $139 because somebody else was willing to bid $134.
  • I once had a celebrity cuts auto #/10 for auction started it at $34.99...no bid...started it at $24.99...no bid....relisted it at $59 or best offer, and within 24 hours got a $49 offer, I was like whatever, SOLD!!!!!

A lot of folks also just flat out ignore BIN's.
