I need some advice

A few years ago I came in to possession a collection of a front and back press plates for a major news paper. Each covers a big event in Baseball history. I know the following to be true

Only 10 of each plate were made (9 presses and a backup)
Each one that I have was used in the production of the paper

I have had these in my collection for some time now and I was thinking about selling them. Someone had told me that I would not be able to sell them because the News Paper owned the rights to the images and it would be considered their property. I was thinking that this would be untrue for a collector sale. Does anyone have any advice on this?

You are fine to sell them.

You can not sell the rights to the article or the image or publish them.

Also, not that it matters, from my understanding of People vs New York Times (re: internet website), the photographer and writers own their properties and not the paper.

  • Possession is 9/10ths of the law. You own them you can sell them, unless you broke into the newspaper and stole them or they were reported as stolen property.
the only thing you can't do is use them to print pages without the consent of MLB & the newspaper.
  • These were actually pulled from the garbage after the printing process was done. So I guess I am good to sell? I can put these up on ebay? I guess I now have to figure out what they are worth.

I bought both of my print plates on ebay. I can't remember how much I bought them for, but I think they ranged from $20 to $50 each. I think they're a cool collectible. Can we see some pics? What event does it cover?

  • As a general rule, you can do virtually anything you want with something found in the garbage.

Everything others have said sounds right to me.

    Jeff:

Those are printing plates? Looks very cool I would have thought the print would be reversed.. looks like a crystal clear copy of the paper...very neat... Nice frame job and some heavy duty hangers there as well.

The ink is applied to the printing plates, and then picked up by rollers (ink reversed at this time), then onto the paper.

Yes, they're printing plates. I framed them myself. I'd love to get more, I just like how they display. It's hard to find any that aren't all dinged and scratched up. These two are in pretty nice condition.

wldcard, do you have a pic of the Ripken?
  • I am new at forums. so please forgive me. I have updated my previous post with images

Those are pretty nice! Once you decide to post them on ebay, please mention something in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum, I'd like to take a shot at that Ripken/Clinton.
  • to Jefcbay - Will do. Also your Immortal Cal Press Plate, does that still have ink on it? It looks pretty dark, or is that just that type of plate?

I don't think it has ink on it, but I don't know much about these things. I just assumed they gave in different colors or something.

    Hi wc - welcome.

I have a simple question...why not contact the news and ask them? Unless those were stolen, they were unloaded by the company and are now the property of the new possessor who can do what they want with them.

Good luck if you plan to sell.

  • I was thinking of contacting the paper but I was worried that they would tell me to return them, just because someone wanted them or just to be difficult, and I would not know the difference. I was just wondering where I stood. I think I got my answer. I think collector to collector sales are fine, as long as I or the purchaser is not reproducing the newspapers

I don't know why they would mess with you - but here's a suggestion - they don't have any idea who you are - just call them and ask - if someone were selling old plates - are they ok to buy? Are they stolen? Were they discarded and ok to buy? Can I reproduce plates that were used some time ago?

    Just a thought.
