1948-1958 Mint set toners graded MS68, Who has one?

I have never seen a lincoln, jefferson, washington, or franklin mint set toner from those years graded MS68. Does anyone have one they would like to show us? Ive seen a roosie or 2 if i remember correctly but thats about it.

There are none in that date range with Jefferson nickels. But if there were, I think that guy would be so far up his own ... that we would never see them.

Since I don't have access to the current Pop reports I couldn't say, but I seem to remember there was 1 Franklin graded MS68 (can't remember with or without FBL).

I have probably sent in well over 1500 mint set toners over the past 5 years....all denominations from 1955-1958....never received a MS68 on any and I believe there were a few coins that deserved the grade but it take just the right combination of strike, luster, pristine surfaces and overall eye appeal to get the coveted MS68......alas I still haven't given up on at least making an MS67 Frankie

That one does appear to have a better strike than what I've seen on these boards anyway. This date in Jeffersons has been a tough one for me although I do like the one I acquired this year.

I had a 1947-S WQ (mint set year) that went MS68 at PCGS. Other than that, I've had quite a large number of dimes and quarters go MS67, but no other MS68 pieces.

I checked the pops for '47-'58 and here are the dates that have at least one MS68 graded. There were no Jeffersons, Walkers or Franklins.

Craig: I only have pics of the coins I have submitted to secure plus thus far, which have not exceeded MS67 in grade for silver quarters. I will send in a few MS68's later this Summer for Secure Plus and get them pictured in the process.

That wonderful 1949-P started out as an NGC-MS68* where it cost $10,925 at auction and was then cracked out of the holder to submit to PCGS raw for the grade after it failed to cross once or twice! It was a surreal feeling when I looked at that coin in the flip and knew that a near $11,000 coin had just been cracked out of the holder (which was worth maybe a 1/10 of that price at the time in the MS67 grade). But, it has been said here before... sometimes PCGS needs to get a good look at the coin raw as opposed to being in a holder to achieve the max grade. The coin "worked" and I knew Craig would love it for the set he was building at the time. Back then, I had just seriously begun to put together my pattern nickel set and figured the proceeds from the sale of this coin would buy a wonderful pattern or two (which they did) so I made the decison to let the coin go. No regrets, especially knowing D. Poole is the caretaker of the coin these days!

P.S. The decision to sell off that 1949-P MS68 was "softened" by the fact that I had 2 or 3 neat toned MS67 coins in my set as well. Here is the first one that I recently got back from secure plus. A very clean coin I thought might easily MS67+. Oh well. Craig can tell you how tough it is to get these toned coins in MS67+ holders. I will likely try it again next year.

Mitch, I am certain you are aware, but you are quite fortunate to have multiple 1949 WQs from Philadelphia with that type of color. It has been my experience that the Denver issues sometimes are graced with those colors, but I have had a very tough time finding matching Philadelphia coins of that look. Superb pieces.

Thanks Tom. Yes, it is very true that not many 1949-P quarters look like either of these. And, I am not sure how many "fresh" 1949 Mint sets are still out there to be "cherrypicked" either. Very few I suppose.
