Question about modern hockey

I've never really been a hockey fan, but I was in Vancouver during the playoffs, and watching the games with the locals got me hooked.

I started looked for some autographs on eBay. I picked up the 2009-10 Be A Player autographs of Roberto Luongo, Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin for about $4 each, delivered.

That seems really low for "star" autographs. Is there something I'm missing about BAP autographs? Are they extremely mass produced, or shaky authenticity or something? Are modern hockey autographs just less expensive than the other sports? Are the Canucks just not widely collected?

Please forgive my ignorance, just not that familiar with hockey.

Well... all of the above. The interest in hockey is low in comparison to the Big 3. While Roberto Luongo is arguably among the Top 25 of current hockey players, since there is about 10% of the interest in hockey autographs/cards that there is in baseball, that means his BAP might have the same value as a baseball player that might be the 100th best player or worse. I've had no trouble buying BAP autos of hockey stars cheap for some time. I bought an Eric Staal PSA 9 BAP auto for $9.99 a few months ago. It isn't about the Canucks. If it isn't Crosby or Ovechkin, nobody cares. I keep waiting for hockey to catch on, but it never does. Meanwhile, I will keep getting hockey on the cheap :-)

It will change if you get into vintage and pre-war hockey. You will see a BIG price jump even on mid grade stuff. I see modern cards in all sports as a bad investment. If you buy a 1 of 1 auto card for $500 and all you are doing is buying the card for the auto, then buy a 1 of 500 auto card for about $50 - $100. I go to the big hockey show in Canada twice a year and even there modern stuff doesn't do well. In hockey it's all about vintage and pre-war. This is where the big money is spent, just ask the guy who purchased a hockey jersey for $1,000,000+ in the Classicauctions.net auction that just ended.

the problem with Luongo autos is that the signature usually has bleeding from his tears.

For the casual fan, that's probably true. However there are many high dollar cards of various players especially when you get into certain products like "The Cup". Hockey probably has the wealthiest fan bases out of the 4 major sports and it often shows in the card world. BAP just isn't a highly sought after card company.

BAP is the easiest set to pull autograph cards - 1 per pack at a decent price point. Also, the BAP autos are on a sticker and not directly on the card. I still like and collect them, but they are to sell.
