Grade/VCP Help on a 1975 Topps Nolan Ryan (scans) **back from PSA, on ebay now**

I'm helping a friend sell his small collection, and I came across this Ryan. He was a Ryan collector, but has nothing older than 1974.

I feel this Ryan has a nice chance at an 8 or even an outside chance of a 9. What do you think? That top-right corner looks strange in the scan, but it looks sharp and clean in person. I've seen MUCH worse 8's.

Can I get a VCP on a PSA 7, 8, and 9? Thanks! image

  • PSA 7 average is $30.52
    PSA 8 average is $100.36

Don't think it has a chance at a 9 but if it does, the last 9 on VCP was a year ago for $2250.

IMHO its a 6 or a 7 (I hope I am wrong and you get 8 or better). The bottom right corner appears to have an issue or maybe its just the scan. The top right corner looks a little soft and slightly rounded as well. Again maybe its just the scan giving an optical illusion. Either way though it is a sweet card! The centering is wicked sweet!

I should have scanned it with the lid open... I guess we'll see! It's box up and ready to ship to Newport Beach! image

I gotta think 7 or 8. Hopefully with that awesome centering it gets the 8! Good luck.

I have an 8 with worse corners. Unless it's miscut or trimmed, I would say you have an 8 with a chance for an 8.5.

The print dots on that card are negligible...I've seen giant fisheyes on PSA 9s from 1975...but I think you're best shot is an 8 on that corner due to slightly soft corners...and the Ryan card is graded tougher, IMO, than a common, and that makes getting a 9 even tougher to begin with.

Edit: Centering on that card (front and back) is as good as it gets!

Yeah, my money is on an 8 also. Can't deny that centering though... so pretty. image

    60% chance PSA 8

    40% chance PSA 7

If the scan had a dark background, we could tell more about it.

Are you going to post a scan when you get it in hand?
  • Nice job on the results. Don't see centering like that on that card very often. I would think that card would get more that $100 IMO.

Yeah, I nearly peed when I saw that... lol. My friend who I'm selling it for is pretty happy too! I ended up buying his entire childhood collection for $80 (trust me, it wasn't even worth that), with the exception of this card. I told him that this card was insane, and I needed to send it away to be graded. I explained to him that I could make him an offer on it, but as a friend, it wouldn't be fair. I might have offered him $30 for it raw. I explained to him the whole grading process, and that the difference between a 7, 8, and 9 are so wide. We made a deal that I would have it graded, sell it on ebay, and split the after-fee profit 50/50. Nice results for both of us! Thanks for the boost! image

I just looked at ebay's completed auctions, and two 1975 topps PSA 8s sold two days ago for $87 and $96.

    You did well!!! image

always nice to set the high end for sales on ebay... Nice work.

I think you would have made more if you would have listed the card the following way with a crazy BIN:

    "1975 Topps #500 Nolan Ryan PSA 8...Low PSA 10's Only 36 Better!!"
