Churchill crowns...image

Are there different obverse die varieties...such as an obverse from a 1960 die?

And yes, this actually a serious question

thanks for any thoughts

None that I am aware of, but my guess would be that not much serious attention have been given to that coin.

    Quick story-

I recently spent my hard earned money on a Churchill Crown- no complaints about the price as it was under a dollar- but the detail and overall appearance of the Queen's portrait was much like, if not identical to the 1960 Crown-

    What is needed-

I wonder if a study/investigation was completed, whether it could be determined from the Royal Mint records or even from interviewing past employees of the Mint if obverse dies from the 1960 crown were used in 1965. I tend to think this is a possibility...if not a probability- This could be the biggest question associated with the business strike of this historically significant coin...

  • What we need is an in-depth study. Someone should volunteer, not me, to buy up 20-30 million then as we live in an age of eco awarness once this exhaustive study has been completed the coins could be recycled. image

okay... so there are some problems with the initial post... we can work through those. It still seems that there are die varieties for the date though

    So who's got side-by-side photos for a '60/'65 comparison?

Here's an obverse from one of the Churchill crowns that I've got.

  • Of cause the obvious difference between the 1960 and 1965 observes is the date on the 1965 whereas the the date on the 1960 is on the reverse. The wording is also completely different. I would also say the denticles are much longer on the 1960.

There are likely varieties with the Queen's Portrait- I have seen come with well struck up features in terms of hair detail- I believe the mintage figure is about 9 mllion- different dies were used- just curious if any are rare
