How does this sound in regards to yet ANOTHER S/H question??

Q: Hi, I am interested in this yearbook but shipping is pretty high. It would be only around $3 to ship to 02888.

A: It would be around $4.95 if I put it in a Priority Mail envelope by itself. But the protect the book so it will arrive undamaged, it will be individually bagged and boarded. Then a stiffening board will be put into the envelope to prevent the post office from folding/bending the program. All this is done to make sure the program arrives in the same condition that they are listed on Ebay. They are all old and rare - it is not like you can just run out to Wal-Mart and pick one up. Unfortunately, all this protection adds weight to the program, and the Post Office charges postage based upon weight and destination. Plus, if the weight exceeds 13 ounces, it automatically becomes Priority Mail, which will exceed the $6 fee easily. Don't worry though - if it exceeds the $6, I won't come asking you for more money! Anyway, it is a common misconception that it is cheaper than it actually is to ship these programs. I hope this clarified the actual shipping costs for you!

I get so tired of buyers dictating how much it actually "cost" to ship something, when it is apparent they really have no clue......

If it really is a rare old yearbook that is hard to find I would have no problem paying the extra $3.00. When it arrives, if it comes back at only $3.00 let him know and maybe he will reimburse you the extra you paid or if not give appropriate feedback in the shipping section.

No..Im the seller...I am the one charging the astronomical sum of $6....and it really does cost me that much to ship them! I don't just stick them by themselves loose in an envelope. They can become damaged that way!!

If he won it he'd probably claim that it was damaged anyway, and request a partial refund to keep it. Let us know who it is, I like to add another name to the BBL. There is just no way to please people like that, why bother trying. Ignore and BBL works very nicely.

He hasn't won it yet. I have a $9.99 opening bid, and with all the others at BIN or higher opening bids, then I am the cheapest priced one. I guess maybe he is a resller and wants to pay as little as possible so he can sell it for as much as possible (get it in line with the others)....

Not sure if this is what the potential buyer means, but a yearbook qualifies for Media Mail service, in which case it would cost about $3.

You know...I never really thought about it? Are you SURE vintage yearbooks constitue Media Service? I know one time I sold some old TIME magazines, and they said I COULD NOT ship them medial mail. Maybe Jim (the gentleman that works for the post office) can chime in here?

I got this direct form the USPS website:

Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books.

These yearbooks have ads on the back promoting some type of item for sale, as well as ads sprinkled throughout the program. I am sure some sellers would try to ship these via Media Mail, but TECHNICALLY these items DO NOT fall under the Media Mail guidelines.

Media Mail is meant for BOOKS (Paperback/Hardback - think of those boring books you read), CD's, DVD's, VHS Tapes. Media Mail IS NOT for Magazines (they usually contain advertisements), Programs, Yearbooks (those usually contains advertisements as well), Playbills, etc. You get the idea.....

I thought you were switching to BIN's. The solution would be easy then, just add $6 to your BIN and ship for free.

Media mail rate doesn't apply to what you're selling but many people will use it for media looking items and never get caught. One problem for you is that it's very slow. The other problem for you is that media mail can be opened by Postal people and if it contains items that are not eligible for media mail then the postage rate is upgraded to first class or priority mail and is delivered postage due to the buyer. Have fun with that one.

It was a great response, but why block him? Maybe he just doesn't realize how much is involved in shipping the item. People seem to quick to block bidders these days.

Because his question indicates he might be a problem.

The count of potential buyers on EBAY is very high. It
really is not necessary to deal with anybody that exhibits
even the slightest trace of antagonism.

Anybody who complains about prices is simply not a
buyer that I wanna deal with.

MOST folks disagree with my view on the issue. I am
happy to stay out of the way and let those folks have
    such buyers.

Some sellers are quick to block bidders that are likely to have problems with the way they choose to run their business. Some buyers like the OP's have the decency to expose themselves prior to the auction ending. If the same comment came in after the auction ends then all would see it as an attempt at extorting money from the seller with poor feedback and DSR scores hanging on the seller's decision.

Yah, you could probably ship it for $3.00 if he/she does not mind if it arrives damaged.

Some people just don't get it and never will.

I have over 1,000 books and sell mostly on half.com -- the yearbook absolutely qualifies for Media Mail -- so it would be around $3 to ship minus your expenses (med./lg. bubble envelope, printing supplies, et cetera) so $6 really isn't that bad, especially if you buy insurance. Personally I would charge $4-5 but that's me.

Just don't ship it to APOs, Alaska, or Hawaii and you will be fine w/ media.

The yearbook WOULD NOT qualifiy for media mail. I am telling you this, the Post Office and I had a lenghty discussion about this today . It has ads on the back (my particular one is a beer ad). Alot of sellers ship items media that really have no business being shipped media. I once got some Cardboard Gold Card Savers I's via media mail! That is also why I wasn't allowed to send my vintage LIFE magazines via Media Mail.....

What eBay says about media mail.

    Use for:

    Books

    Film

    Manuscripts

    Printed music

    Printed test materials

    Sound recordings

    Play scripts

    Printed educational charts

Loose-leaf pages and binders consisting of medical information

Videotapes and computer recorded media such as CD-ROMS and diskettes

Please mark each package "Media Mail" in the postage area. "Media Mail" will already appear on the shipping label when you create and print your label on eBay.

Media Mail is sometimes called "Book Rate." It is less expensive than Parcel Post.

    Media Mail cannot contain advertising.

    Postal Service says:

Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books.

    This taken from another site:

Yes, media mail makes an exception for ads only in that a book may be shipped media mail with ads as long as those ads are only promotional material advertising other books (such as the back cover ads for the author's new book etc.) They still cannot contain ads for toothpaste, movies, soda pop, etc.

A yearbook does not sound like it could be shipped media. Doesn't mean that one can't and maybe it get's to it's destination without being opened and searched but that possibility always exists.

And let's no forget that this could happen as well.

    image

Seller did not list that items would ship media but he thought that nothing would happen. He was wrong!

I wish all vintage magazine/book sellers package stuff like you.
So many ebay sellers just throw a nice condition vintage mag in the mail with little or no protection and it arrives dinged and creased. It's frustrating. Plus as a buyer you don't want to sound like a jerkoff suggesting to a seller 'how to package properly'.

The OP does it the right way.

    Afternoon,

    Well Storm,
I agree with you 100 %, if its a stupid question..BBL, If its any question about why shipping is?...BBL, If it is question about when they will recieve item, like a Buyer telling me what their deadline for delivery is (You laugh, I have had this happen over a dozen times)...Immedeate BBL, Snide comment...BBL, Question about an item that is answered 3 times in the listing...BBL, Just don't like the tone of the question...BBL. And any other reason that I don't think of right now...BBL!!!!!!!!!!!

And you know the funny thing, I was bored last week and went through and eliminated 200+ E-bay ID's from my BBL, and you know why...Because I took the time to look them up and out of 225 or so in my BBL, almost 200 are Gone...NARU'd. I'd say that says something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both EBAY and goofbay.com have a tool that will auto-remove
NARUd names from the BBL. (Takes less than 10-seconds.)

My fashion-BBL has more than 4K IDs on it. The last time I
cleaned it, almost 1,200 dropped off. Fraud and bad-returns
are rampant in the category; and EBAY has been doing a good
job of getting rid of some of the criminals.

    and I agree with thedutymon.

  • another thing that scares me more and more is the buyers that can't read or are to lazy to.

In all my auctions in the description section, I state shipping xxx for the 1st item and xxx for each additional item won within a 5 day period, but at least 2 to 3 times a week, i get the question do u combine shipping? learn how to read people .

description: t206 ty cobb poor condition this card has multiple creases and has writing on the back and has a nail hole in it. see pics.

Ebay is becoming loaded with idiot buyers.

I would have told him the extra money is for alcohol so you can have enough money to be drunk enough to deal with idiots like him.

Again, these are customers you would rather have your competitor deal with.

I don't own any yearbooks -- but I suppose there are some without ads, as you have stated.

I guess the t206 books PSA sent with ads in the package doesn't qualify for the Media Mail it was shipped under.

I actually thought of that one as well. Come on people, most of the Paperback books that I buy nowdays have an ad for more books in them, does that disqualify them for the exact mailing level that Media was designed for. I don't worry about Ads, I use Media Mail all the time for Books, Magazines, Programs, Lists, Misc Printed items, and Yearbooks if I sold them!!! Knock on Wood have never had anything opened and sent on with request for more postage...And if that did happen...OMG it wouldn't be the end of the World!!!!!!! Sheesh !!! And on a lot of items the difference between Media and First Clas is like .20 cents so I just pay the higher cost.
