Why would he send the Mantle to Beckett?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

That Texas hill-jack is their Senior Grader?? Good grief... sounds like a ton of stuff wrong with that card to still keep it a 9.5...

Most hobbyists are casual collectors and stil think Dr. James Beckett is a cardboard god...despite not being a part of the company in any form.

  • Me personally feel like the seller used beckett because of the secure holder and the buyer cannot open and switch the card out.. We have all seen fake iconic cards on ebay in other parties holders. With the seller's low feedback he made a good choice in the security of the card on ebay. Jmho

I would have went with Psa on the grading of that card. Awesome surface! I love how the seller showed the before and after photo of the card image

If I'm selling a Mantle like that, I'm investing in a nice scanner...

It's a shame that the Mantle is barely mentioned. Even worse, they can't decide which they would rather have: a midgrade '52 Mantle or an artifically limited '10 Strasburg SuperFractor. Sigh...

As for the Strass, funny how with all of the "flaws", it's still a 9.5

    Per the Senior Grader:

    1) Front and back are off center
    2) Corners have a couple problems on the back
    3) Right edge has a kinda roughness going on
    4) Back surface has a couple indentations

But otherwise, it's a great card and deserving of the 9.5 grade.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

If I was them I would focus my attention to the Mantle and quit talking of how the card has so much problems! I like beckett and use beckett for grading but shoot man that card is a 8.5 no matter what they say.
No way in heck if that was a $50 card it would get a 9.5.
The way they explained it goes like this. 8.5 on centering, surface 8.5, edges 9, and corners 9 overall grade 8.5 . Could get a 9 if they .5 bump.
This i think is a more accurate, anybody agree with me?
I have graded 100's of cards through beckett and this is what it would get if I was pre-grading the card.

I am still a fan of Modern Beckett grading but vintage should remain with Psa!

I could not agree more. I started a thread about this and a bunch of tools tried to argue other wise. Not only was the card not even close to Gem Mint, the idea that a brand new card with artificialy low supply as mentioned above could sell for more then a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle is like saying Pets.com was a strong buy at $115 a share. Bare in mind the stock doesn't exist anymore.

He should have had Beckett Media list it for him, I believe they would have done it for free, $15k with 5 days left, damn...
