I saw a 1958 Mint set on ebay and the D mint coins in the set looked to have some super potential. The P board looked colorful but imo just seemed off and really didnt appeal to me. The pics in the auction focused more towards the color but you can't grade (or even try to imo) or see any of the strike detail on the coins at all. Grade wise you are rolling the dice so its all about the color. Well i thought i was crazy thinking about placing a bid at $260 and when i went to it went to $360 bux!!!! Now if you think that is crazy look at what it closed at!!!! This is crazy moon money for a raw mint set!!!! Crazyness

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Q: Who in their right mind would "seriously" bid $805 for a $200 item?
A: Someone who wanted to be sure and squash any $200, $300, and $400 bids that squeaked through in the last few seconds.
Well, it appears that the underbidder took the winner to the supermarket!
The name is LEE!
The d-mint set is amazing and the quality in most the coins look pcgs 67, at least that's what the bidders were thinking.
Of course you would need better images to tell the grades.

<< <i>Not a shill bidder. The underbidder is a board member, and I believe he was disappointed he didn't win the set when he had a max bid of $805.

The D board was indeed what had the value in that set. Very nice color but to assume those coins will grade 67 by those pics is a long shot! You can only see one side of the coins as well. The only logical thing i can think of is maybe they emailed the seller and the seller described the coins as being 66 to 67 in grade and offered a full refund if not happy. Also maybe sent a few pics over as well to further confirm grade wise. In any case i wish the buyer all the best and hopefully the other side of the coins look as good if not better than the ones showing and grade wise they are high.
If you want nice double mint sets with rainbow toning like that, sometimes be prepared to pay multiples of the norm price for these sets.

<< <i>I predicted this set would sell for around $400. Boy was I wrong!

I also thought the 400 range would be about right but going for double that i would never have guessed that one! I wonder if a board member won that set?
You must be clairvoyant.
That set looks OK, but certainly not worth $800.
If you think it is, PM me and I'll be happy to sell you some of my personal sets for $800.

If any one believes I do not know what I am talking about PM me and I will give you an idea of what I typically sell the graded singles for in these colorful sets
<< <i>I was an under bidder and would have easily dropped $500 just for a shot at the color I believe to be lurking on the reverse side of those coins. Those folks in the know...myself included know how much the individual coins are worth if submitted and frankly it astounds me that so many folks not in the know would act like it's a crazy buy at $815. It's certainly a lot stronger price then what these typically sell for and it's higher then I would go without much better pictures but I will pretty much guarantee that this buyer can make a profit on these coins if he pops out individual coins and has them graded. Folks seem to think the deciding factor here is the grades when reality....high grades is just a bonus...the color is where the money is like it or not. If the coins grade high with this color then he could probably double hius money.

Ive played the game many times and i still do. I have noticed and can agree that the color is key but if you slab them in MS64 or lower it simply just isnt worth it. IMO the only ones i like to grade is the quarters and halves as they are not only my fav, but command the highest prices. The only way i send the others is if they are high grade and have sweet color. I also would have went to the moon on that set if i saw them in person so i can see what i am getting first.
I know the winning bidder and consider him a friend, and am dissapointed he's going to get this set and emailed him seconds after the bidding to congratulate him.
Segoja, do you have pics?
Sick in the head,
Jeff
I feel sick!! Not because I would have sold it but because I wanted to own it forever.

WOW. I guess $815 bux in the end was a bargain! The highest i paid for a 58 set was $585 but was able to view the set in hand.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Thanks Justacommem. The one things I knows is that I am a big sucker for nuclear mint set color, a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig one.
I've gotten awesome sets for "bid", and have paid way up and am cool with both. But it must have been some kind of X-Factor that stacked the hairs up on my neck when I saw that ebay set. I've seen ONE like it before and was not smart enough to jump.
Sticking to his guns...
what was that you were saying James ?
