Priority Registered ?

mrearlygoldmrearlygold Posts: 17,858 ✭✭✭
Someone sent me a package on the 24th, priority registered? I am unfamiliar with this method of shipping. I put the reg number into usps.com and it merely says it was accepted at such and such place.

Anyone know about this method of shipping and how long should it take to receive from the midwest to sw Fla you reckon ?

I believe if a Registered package is greater than a certain size or weight limit that it then automatically has Priority postage added to it. However, it moves through the system no faster than traditional Registered packages.

As has been noted here on a number of occasions, it is a waste of money to use "priority" when shipping via registered mail. That's because the (priority) package will not arrive any faster, due to the overriding requirements of how the registered mail is handled.

registered is registered and always as slow.

priority vs. regular is just an indication of weight.

I find that most Post Office clerks have been schooled on "upselling", or adding features for extra revenue generation for the post Office. Perhaps the sender was upsold on Priority.

Can be a price saver as the flat rate boxes can be used for heaver weight shipment up to seventy pounds. So valuable and heavy would be a valid reason to use that.

I like those Priority Mail boxs and flat rate is the only way to go since regular Priority Mail can get very expensive very quickly.

Your registered package could arrive in as few as two days. I routinely get two day registered service coast to coast to and from a certain East Coast city. Others, like Boston, sometimes take two weeks to arrive here in Portland Oregon.

Priority is the shipping method calculated by weight + location (unless its a flat rate box), and Registered is an extra service added on only calculated by value of the contents. First class mail is the post offices basic shipping method and it is claimed to take roughly 2-3 days to deliver in the same country. First class mail is how your basic letter size mail is shipped but 1st class letters cant exceed 3.5 oz and probably a certain size. Priority mail and 1st class mail are the same but packages automatically become Priority mail once they reach more then 13 ounces. Priority mail and 1st class mail are shipped equally as fast so dont be suckered into shipping Priority for a bubble wrap envelope that weighs 5 oz. Registered mail is an extra service, like delivery/signature confirmation, that is claimed to keep the parcel under tight security throughout the shipment, and the only experience I have with registered mail didnt update the shipment location until it was delivered 1 week later. So I would say dont expect the package location to be update enroute and expect that it could take a week or slightly more. Kinda lame but understandable when you consider its supposedly unique in how its handled.

I kinda wonder if Registered mail gives the post office an excuse to let the package sit until it can be "safely" moved by whoever is authorized to move it. I can see how it could sit for a few days at your point of drop off until someone is available to move it.

I would assume that if someone used Registered mail they always must use the 1st class / Priority method also or else they could ship something thats valued at $500 and weighs 70 lbs. in a huge box, use the Registered service and only pay like $10 or so to have it shipped. That doesnt make sense. Instead what happens is someone could use a medium flat rate box for $10.70 and then add the Registered service for $10 and ship that $500 item for $20.70 which makes more sense.

I think if you turn it around and call it "Registered Priority" it makes more sense since its a Priority mail package with Registered service added.

I recently had priority registered get to Hawaii, Colorado, Chicago from southern California in 2-3 days.
It's good for heavy valuable items and the insurance is cheaper than first class.

I've shipped bag + quantities of silver dollars (up to 70#) by Registered service, in a Priority Flat Rate box at a savings of about $75 on the postage (and peace of mind re:security) and depending upon the route between point of origin and destination, the service may be very quick or dreadfully slow.

In defense of the post office, they never claim that registered mail includes the ability of customers to track packages in transit. In fact, they specifically state that tracking is not included:

    From here:

"Delivery information will provide delivery status or attempted delivery status when the item reaches its destination, it will not provide tracking of the item as it is enroute to its destination."

They don't want you to be able to track it. That is a part of the security.

When shipping registered and weight is over 13 ozs. you will be charged a higher, priority rate. This is automatic based on weight. You can request priority regisitered if it is under 13 oz. but you will be wasting your money because the both travel at the same speed.....very slow. If your registered package is under 13 ozs make sure you tell the clerk "first class registered" or they might charge you the higher priority rate when it is not required. Also, when shipping registered, since you have to go to the counter to do it, purchase the electronic return receipt instead of delivery confirmation. Electronic is cheaper, purchased without filling out any forms and recognized by paypal.

Priority mail and first class mail insurance rates are the same

Registered rates are lower, but you have to pay the registered fee. Over $1000-1200 it pay to go registered.

I've done the math on hundreds of shipments and I always find registered cheaper on anything insured for $700 and over.

When I get registered/priority packages from Colorado [to Connecticut] the tracking shows when it hits Willimantic, CT a city 20 miles away where they sort the mail. Once the USPS tracking shows it left Wilimantic I usually get it the same day.
The package I am now waiting for left Colorado on Monday June 21st according to USPS tracking.
Oddly the company who sent it e-mailed me and said it was shipped June 22nd.
There were no updates for NINE days and this morning tracking shows it left Willimantic at 2am last night. I am now sitting here looking out the window for the mailman. So he may not even bring it until tomorrow.
Regardless, USPS Registered/Priority takes 9 or 10 days.

Registered mail is a service that the USPS adds to a package/letter. You still have to pay the postage. They require that all registered mail be charged at First Class or Priority rate. So anything over 13 oz has to go priority.

Priority mail delivery schedules do not apply to registered. Registered mail is handled separately and this slows it down. It doesn't matter that the postage rate charged was priority--that is just the fee schedule, not the delivery schedule.

Registered mail does not show intermediate tracking online. There may be some inconsistencies and occasionally you may see the package scanned at some facility but that is not normal. If it is lost, the USPS can track in through their internal system, different from the online system. Yes, it sounds very governmental to have two systems.

I thought that registered mail had to be sealed with that special brown tape with the fibers in it, how is it posible to do that and have the postal cleark know that the box is a flat rate box??

not true when you use the flat rate boxes to ship very heavy packages registered. I also rthought they had to go priority over 1lb.

sealed, not completely covered and I think its just the thicker brown tape in general. Probably has something to do with clear tape being less noticeable when its tampered with. When I shipped a package Registered a few weeks ago I had the medium flat rate box with clear tape over the seams. The clerk said I had to use brown tape and cover all the seams.

Just remember though you still have to pay for the shipping method of 1st class / priority though, its just that if you need to ship registered and the package weighs 13 oz or less then it doesnt make any sense to use priority.

You only need do the seams on boxes so as long as the words flat rate are not covered up, you are ok. The ink will not smear when the stamp is applied to a non-taped spot on the box. OTOH, AFAIK you cannot use the flat rate priority envelopes for registered because the surfaces are shiny/glossy and the ink stamp will smear.

Well, it has now going on the 7th day since shipping and no sign of a delivery. Had I known this I would have let the seller use my insurance to ship me via express mail. Dang.
