What are the iconic cards you must have in your collection?

As I re-orgnanize my collection, I'm developing a list of big time cards that I currently don't have in my collection. Some of these I have (and do not like them enough to keep them), others I've never had.

My list is below. It's a wish list, of course, but I think I can get most of these.

I want to see your lists. Let's see what you'd like to get and make this a really good thread.

Burgundy's list:

Stars: (sort of in priority order)

Aaron: 58, 66, 61, 59, 55, 56, 60, 68, 69, 70-74, 76.

Clemente: 58, 66, 67, 63, 56, 60, 70, 71, 72.

Mantle: 52 Topps, 53 Topps, 51 Bowman, 53 Bowman, 57 # 407, 62, 63, 59, 56, 69, 65, 66, 67, 69, 64, 61, 52 Bowman, 54 Bowman, 55 Bowman. ( I am VERY picky abt Mantles)

Mays: 52 Topps, 53 Topps, 51 Bowman, 58, 66, 52 Bowman, 54, 55, 64, 54 Bowman, 55 Bowman, 59, 60, 61, 68, 70-72.

Koufax: 57, 55, 58, 62, 56, 64, 61.

Others (in order by year): 51 Bowman T. Williams, 52 Topps Mathews, J Robinson, 54 Topps Williams (both 1 and 250), 54 Topps Banks RC, 57 Frank Robinson RC, 57 Dodgers Sluggers, 59 Gibson RC, 60 Yaz RC, 65 Rose, 67 B Robinson, 67 Seaver RC, 68 Ryan RC, 69 Ryan, 69 Reggie RC.

RB, Great thread, I am sure everyone's definition of iconic cards differs, but here are the cards I am looking to add that I consider iconic in nature: I am going to preclude any Clemente or Musial cards as I am building or have built there Basic sets already.

    I currently own:

    1948 Bowman Musial RC
    1951 Bowman Mantle RC
    1955 Topps Clemente RC

    That I want to own:

    T-206 Ty Cobb
    T-206 Christy Mathewson
    T-206 Walter Johnson
    T-206 Cy Young

    1933 Goudey Babe Ruth

    1939 Play Ball Ted Williams

    1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson
    1948 Leaf Warren Spahn

    1951 Topps Willie Mays

    1954 Topps Hank Aaron

    1953 Topps Mickey Mantle
    1956 Topps Mickey Mantle

Like to own in PSA 8.5 or higher:

    1967 Topps Tom Seaver
    1968 Topps Nolan Ryan

Edit to add: I forgot Hank Aaron

in all my years of collecting, i've never gone in hot pursuit of a Gretzky rookie, but someday i'd like to own a nice NM-MT OPC & Topps example.....rarely have i had the pleasure of even flipping one, i think the best one i've temporarily owned is a Topps PSA 6.

still missing from my faves, just off the top of my head: Hi-Grade, sharp, centered, glossy, blah blah....Drysdale RC, Billy Williams RC, Ryan RC, Ditka RC, Walton RC, Gervin RC, and a Stephen Strasburg 1/1 auto insert.

wait. no. scratch that.......just the dudes already enshrined in a sports museum are fine. image

also gradually building player collections on Yaz, Banks, Clemente, Killebrew, F. Robi, and just about any other super-nice vintage Dodgers cards, no specific list, just know it when i see it. image

    Football:
    1957 Topps Johnny Unitas
    1958 Topps Jim Brown
    1976 Topps Walter Payton

    Basketball:
    1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain
    1969 Topps Lew Alcindor

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Great post Ron. There are a few that have been difficult for me to get because I am so picky.===I'm only going with reasonable cards.

    PSA 7 + 1954 Bowman Mantle
    PSA 8 1959 Mays
PSA 7 1959 Mantle---do these ever look good
    PSA 8 1962 Mantle
    PSA 8 1954 Bowman Mays
    PSA 8 1963 Mays
GEM MINT 1975 Aaron to submit raw

I'm also looking for the ultimate 64 and 66 Mantle's in PSA 8 holders. I have many 8's; but that near 9 has eluded me. I'm also always looking for 55 Bowman Mantle's---love that card.

Good question but I think many are mistaking this for what are the most iconic cards, period. Here are mine. I think they're iconic and they're cards I'd like to compile someday:

any one of the 1933 Goudey Ruth cards
    1939 Play Ball Ted Williams
    1948 Bowman Stan Musial
    1951 Parkhurst Rocket Richard
    1955 Topps Sandy Koufax
    1957 Topps Johnny Unitas
    1957-58 Topps Bill Russell
1964 Pete Rose - not the rookie. I always think the 64 is iconic.
1965 Topps Joe Namath - say what you want about him, the card is iconic
    1967 Topps Carl Yastrzemski
    1970-71 Topps Pete Maravich
    1980-81 Bird/Erving/Magic (HAVE)
1986 Topps Roger Clemens (HAVE) - the card that got me into collecting. Not the rookie.
1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr (HAVE)

Tho I haven't added a T3 to my set in some time - the one that will set me back will be the Cobb. I would like a nice 3 or 4.

There's a couple of board games I would like also.

And - unfortunately - I'm still looking for one piece of sheet music also.

Sorry if I strayed from the cards - as such - topic.

    Evening,
As of Press time neither one of these existed, but the cards would be 1962 Topps Mars Attacks #1 PSA MINT 9 (Estimate cost will be $25-50K) or #55 Checklist PSA MINT 9 (Estimate Cost $75-100K), or the first and only GEM MINT 10 for any common from this set (Estimate Cost $50K).
