Colorized Silver Eagles

Hi !
I recently purchased a collection with a bunch of these colorized 1 OZ Eagles.

Does anyone know how to get the "color" off w/o scratching the coin???

I just want to have the 1oz silver coins not the color...
Thanks!

Acetone removes most paints and adhesives, although I don't know if it will work with these.
Methylene Chloride (Dichloromethane) would also work though I don't know if you can get that at your local hardware store any longer.

    (sorry,my iPhone doesn't do links)

I think that paint will be easier to remove than the Perth's one!
  • Thanks Folks... Will try acetone.

I just bought a collection of 47 of these.... I can't think it's worth it to acetone 47 coins...

It seems like these bring a premium individually on eBay any right?

Yup...acetone takes the paint, plastic or whatever right off.

I just acetoned about 6 colorized ASEs and they all look perfect like they came out of a fresh roll.image

Methylene chloride could react with the ASE just like PVC and make it milky if one isn't careful.

  • How good is the paint job? If it looks like it was applied with a cheap dot matrix printer a 15 minute acetone bath will take it off no problem. If the paint thicker and glossy and without the dots it's most likely not coming off with acetone. However, give it a shot as the acetone won't hurt the coin. I've done this to about 20 eagles and it worked on all but one of them. One Eagle had Ronald Reagan painted on it. I felt terrible guilt melting his face off of that coin. I've also melted Obama and Elvis.

Don't forget a lid when you're giving them a bath. The acetone will evaporate very quickly.

I had a bunch of loose ones a while back that my local buyer wouldn't take so like everyone has said I threw them in an acetone bath and they were good as new.

I suggest trying acetone with just one coin first just to see what's involved. You may decide it's more effort than it's worth and you may decide to just sell or trade them as is.

Take the time to remove the "color". You will end up getting way more for them.

Make sure the acetone is as pure as you can get at the hardware store, no fingernail polish remover.image
