Its a worthless fantasy issue usually found in antique/flea markets. But they are copied after authentic ones though.
FYI, in case you run into these again..... The only one on that list above that you may look closer at is the Paige, there are authentic pencil clips from the late 1940's to 1950's showing players from the St. Louis Browns and Cleveland Indians, and they bring very good $$, often over $100 ea..
The indian clips were issued over a few years with rim color changing every year. There are 90 total different. Black 1948 20 dif. Brown 1949 20 dif. White 1950 19 dif. Blue 1951 (have a white union label) 12 dif. Blue 1952 (no union label) 19 dif.
The authentic St.L Browns clips are very rare. There are at least 9 different (including Veeck), maybe more. They have a light cream to white background and the portrait photo is very clear. The Paige from this set has been reproduced at least 2 times in the 1970-80s, with different size of the portrait and overall color far too dark being the differences. Be careful with the Paige clip...... 99.5+% of all Paige St.L Brown's clips are these repos.
well crap, Had this item since the late 80's looked old then, figured it to be 1920's or 30's. all I have is the 1997 SCD big book (bible) and never could find it. (of course it being a fake explains why).
fkw : couple of questions if you don't mind. 1. did they produce most of these in the 70's & 80's? I know the book said late circa 1990's but I have had the pin since 1988/89? 2. on the originals were there any manufacturers marks? made by ect ect.
This one definitely fooled me having rust build up and little dents/scratches ect ect. will post a pic of the back and try to get a better pic of front.
wonder if there is any value to repros/fantasy items as there is to some of the mechanical banks that where reproduced in the mid 50's ? because this one is definitely a good fake at least to me.
Just from seeing them around, I believe the players like Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson etc. were from the 1980s, maybe early 90's as thats the first time I remember seeing them.
At least one of the 2 types of the Paige St.L Browns fakes was earlier. I had 2 of the Paiges about 1980 and from what I know now after seeing the authentic ones, they were fakes I had in 1980. The Paige has a different design than the Mathewson you show, it like the other Browns clips just has a offwhite/cream color background with a B&W portrait.
Most of the info I noted above on the authentic ones, was copied from a post by Rob Dewolf on Net54 a while back and it shows a good pic of the rare Browns clips.
