99 Down--1964 Topps Football Completed in PSA 8 or Better

As I approach 100 sets completed in PSA 8 or better, the set completions are ocurring more quickly than I ever dreamed of. Once again, it is dealer and hobby friend Steve Novella who delivered the final card in the 1964 Topps Football set--Tom Flores. Thank you Steve.

Unlike the baseball card sets from this time period, the mid-1960s football sets are very difficult to complete in PSA 8 or better. This set is a particularly difficult set nto complete with many low pop cards. While the Tom Flores is a pop 14, there are 15 cards that have single digit pops in psa 8. The lowest 3 are pop 6--the Dunaway RC, Fred the Hammer Williamson and Smokey Stover. The Stover and pop 7 Art Powell were very difficult cards for me.

There are 176 cards in the set. My set is complete at a set rating of 8.02 and has 172 psa 8s, 1 psa 8.5 and 3 psa 9s. It ranks second behind noted football card collector Wolfbear. I will let it rest at this level.

This set represents my 99th vintage or semi-vintage set with each card psa 8 or better and my 26th football set. My goal has long been 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets with each card psa 8 or better. It seems hard to believe I am almost there. I appreciate the help of all colloectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goals.

I actually have a few of these. Nice , set.

I hope one day , if you have lots of time, that you post pics of all your sets.

    Jim,

As always, CONGRATS! I hope that you look very carefully at the sets that you are close to finishing and pick out the one that means the most to you ... AND MAKE THAT YOUR 100TH!

I remember in January you saying that you were hoping to finish #100 by year's end ... looks like you may do it half way thru the year.

Keep it up. Maybe one day I'll take you up on your offer to drive from Long Island to New Jersey to look at your little HALL OF FAME!
    STAY HEALTHY!

    Donato,

Thank you. Hard to believe I am almost there.

    Hank,

What will 100 be? I don't know. I have had two inquiries today--one on a baseball set I do not collect that is not quite complete and one on a non-sports set that I do collect that would involve the seller breaking up his set. Probably not either of these. Thanks for the kind words.

    Steve,

Thank you. I am not sure that is the same one. I believe Steve bought that directly from another collector but he may have asked seller to pull it off ebay--I don't know.

    Sonny,

Its not going to be tonight. I do have a scanner but I don't know how to use it. I would post pictures if I had instructions on how to do it.

    Marc,

Thanks. I was 10 years old when I collected that set as a kid and I remember it well.

    Doug,

If it were only that easy. The cards I need are generally very difficult to find. The good news is I love all of my sets so I would be very happy having any of them as my 100th--or even having a set I don't currently collect as long as I like it. You are of course welcome to see it anytime--probably 75 minute drive from your house--or come to my party this summer.

    Ralph.

    Thanks--much appreciated.

Amazing collection you have. It's been fun watching your posts as your collection grew over the years and now you're one step away from 100.

    Incredible!

    Greg,

It has gone quicker than I thought and in somewhat of a different direction. I have been helped by collecting non-sports that I like and pushing out to 1970. Some sets just are impossible to finish. Either the card does not exist or it is a very low pop in 8 or better I cannot find it.

    Don,

Thank you. I wish I could say it was just around the corner--we'll see?

    Joe,

    Thanks--its been fun.
