98 Down--1934 Gallaher Champions of Screen & Stage Completed in PSA 8 or Better

As I near my goal of 100 set completions with every card PSA 8 or better, the completions are coming faster than expected as more and more dealers and fellow collectors are pitching in to help me reach my goal. I am truly appreciative.

My 98th set and bought completely intact from non-sports collector Keith Pennington is the 1934 Gallaher Set--Champions of Screen & Stage. Keith has sold me 1939 Gallaher-My Favourite Part and 1938 Ogden's Actors and Character Studies completely intact PSA 8 and better in the past and 1936 Gallaher Film Episodes needing just 1 card to be upgraded which Mike Cable later gave me. Keith has reached into his extensive 1930s movie card collection and found another beautiful set for me with this one.

The set is 48 cards and consists of 25 PSA 8s and 23 PSA 9s. Among the movie greats featured in this set are Douglas Fairbanks(9), Clark Gable(8), Mae West(8), Greta Garbot(9), Bing Crosby(9), Joan Crawford(9), Katherine Hepburn(9), Jean Harlow(8), and Maurice Chevalier(9). It ranks number one on the PSA Set Registry with a 8.46 set rating. I will let it rest at this level.

This set represents my 98th set with each card PSA 8 or better and my 19th non-sport set.The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. Set #99 is in my sights. I have no idea which will be my 100th set. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goals.

Surprised you don't have 57 Topps Football and 71 OPC Hockey in there Jim! Those must be on the list for the future, no? Your collection is amazing.

    Doug,

    Thank you!

    Mike,

For the past 4 years or so all I have needed in the 1957 Topps set is the Checklist. I don't remember what the pop in 8 is but I don't believe I have ever seen one in that grade.

I have a raw hockey set from that year but have not yet gotten it graded. Maybe someday.

    Thank you.

    Jim,

You are correct ... that checklist is REAL tough.

BAZOOKA VARIATION - THREE PSA 8s with NONE higher.

TWIN BLONY VARIATION - TWO PSA 7s with NONE higher.

THIS, is going to be a tough one to complete. HOWEVER, if ANYONE can complete it ... YOU DA MAN!

    Doug,

That does not surprise me--its a rare card in high grade.

Another checklist I need that is the last card in the set is 1966 Topps Football #132

Congratulations again. How close are you on the 52 or 55 Topps Baseball? (you probably mentioned before but I'm not savvy enough to look it up as well as being lazy) Either would be a great accomplishment for #100.

    Ralph,

I'm afraid 1952 Topps in PSA 8 or better is out of my league. While I need 52 cards(many upgrades) to finish an 8 or better set they include Pafko. Mantle, Mathews and a lot of low pops. Even if I could find the cards it would probably cost nearly $500,000 to finish it. At some point I may try to finish that set in 7/8. A few years ago I decided to put 5 sets on the backburner because of cost/ difficulty issues the others being T206, M116. 33 Goudey and 49 Leaf.

But 1955 Topps is one I would love to finish to make my 100th set. All I need is an upgrade of card #195 Ed Roebuck. It is a pop 31 in psa 8 which should make it findable even though he is a high numbered Dodger.

I would like to finish 1953 Topps in psa 8 or better and I am down to just 17 PSA 7s to upgrade. Other vintage baseball sets I am close on include 1949 Bowman(5), 1950 Bowman(2) and 1939 Play Ball(5).

    Jimbo-lillo,

I'll get the invites ready, get the Winnebago all gassed up ... and make reservations for the moon bounce and pony rides. What band will be playing this year? ;-)

    Mike

PS - BTW, if you'd quit disrespecting those two 1976 Crane and Buckmann PSA 10 sets I sold you a few years ago you'd be at 100 completed sets today. I mean you're putting Wonder Bread and movie star sets in there now ... why not our beloved round cards? And Yes, I still have the 1976 Saga Disc set (all PSA 9's & 10's) still sitting here on my shelf waiting for you. Another fitting set for your #100 one!

    Sonny,

Thank you. I will be sure to let you know on the date for the party.

    Mike,

Long time no hear! You have missed a lot of parties. Get Art and drive up here. Washington DC is not that far. Are you going to the National?

Probably either Chicago or the Doobie Brothers--in contact with both.

You are right about the Wonder Bread set but the Movie Star sets are truly vintage and the cards are beautiful.

I appreciate the Discs but they are not really vintage or semi-vintage and they are not really cards. Fuzz told me it would diminish my list if I included them?

    Pay attention to #99--its football!

looking for Topps 71-72 hi's-62-53-54-55-59, I have these sets started

    Fred,

Could be a lot longer than a week. I do not have any real promising leads on my next set.

Also 100 sets is not completion--just my goal. I can see me going on past 100.

    << <i>1934 Gallaher Set--Champions of Screen & Stage >>

    Hi Jim

Congratulations on the 98th set! I have that set - it's pretty cool - cards are brilliant!

Keep in mind that PSA will be awarding you a PSA monogrammed set of steak knives when you hit the plateau! image

    What's your favorite set?

It seems I remember a 52T set in PSA 8 selling a few years ago - I also think it was a flip - the person selling it, didn't even keep it very long after putting it up for sale.

Good luck on #100! I'm inferring that you haven't started the set? I think the 1990 Donruss set would be nice (to my son, it's vintage!) image

    Hey Mike,

    Nice to hear from you!

Surprised to hear you collect this set!

Hard to say if I have started set 100--it depends if someone comes to me and offers me a graded set that I like??

My favorite set? Probably 1934 Goudey Sports Kings although I love the sets I collected during the years I was growing up.

    Regards,

    Jim
