So if Papelsuck lived up to his contract and past performance, the Red Sox would have tied for the wildcard (i.e. assuming he had only 2 BSV instead of 8).
I too was as disappointed as anyone over Papelbon's choking in what now turn out to be key games. However, he is but one piece of the pie and I can't lay all the blame at his feet. One need only review the season's history, from Ellsubury to Matsuzaka, to Drew ($14m per), to the entire bullpen and spots inbetween. The injuries were huge, especially when we lost Youkilis and Pedroia.

We can only hope. The only thing Papelsuck has been able to close lately is the Red Sox season!

vs. 1.87. A no-brainer who should close.
His days closing are numbered, at least in the AL East. His stuff would still be considered above average out west.
If we don't off him this winter while his stock is still worth something we'd be fools.
A fitting end to this Cinco Ocho Sucko thread.

Did Papelbon choke? You bet, but so did others.
It's ovah, let's hope for a better year in 2011.
