SGC Authentic Question???

If SGC grades a card authentic does it mean it has not be altered?

I use BGS authenticating and I know that if the card is altered they will tag it "Authentic Altered". I am looking at an SGC card on eBay and it is graded authentic by SGC. Just wanted to make sure that this means they don't think it is altered.

Probably means it has been altered. Go to the SGC forums. Brian will answer your questions.

Many cards graded Authentic are altered. It genereally represents that it is a real, original card, and is being authenticated as such. But, typically, due to some changes that have taken place on the card, it is ineligible for a numerical grade.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Mikeschmidt is correct. Sgc uses the Authentic label to represent any card that will not be eligible for a numeric grade. Whether it be by some form of alteration or if the card would'nt grade a SGC 10(Poor), the lowest grade offered.
Psa used to put what type of alteration the card had on the slab, I think they replaced that with just the authentic-altered slab though.

I have had a Mantle card that SGC graded authentic (the wrong grade) come back a PSA 4 (MC) (the right grade).....it doesn't hurt to get a 2nd opinion.....

Thanks for the answers. That really sucks cause I love the centering and color of this card. Might pick it up anyway if it goes real cheap. I was hoping they did the same as BGS.
