Question of baseball fan etiquette

I had a lighthearted conversation with a friend last night about going to the Braves game this afternoon. My friend is one of these guys who often brings a broom to the stadium in game 3 of a potential sweep. I asked him if he was going to take the broom on Sunday and he said "No Way, its the Royals." He further explained that he only thinks its appropriate to bring sweep brooms or use any other taunting tactic IF the team you are playing is a really good team. I had never heard this before. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

  • I agree with your friend. If you consider your team to be a good team, taunting the players on a team that has pretty much been awful every single year for the last 20 years should be beneath you.
If you sweep KC at home, you didn't do anything noteworthy. Save the brooms for the rivals.

Years ago (1995-1996?) at a Class A Florida State League game, I was watching the West Palm Beach Expos go for a five game sweep of the Daytona Cubs. A super-noisy fan that sat behind the plate for every game and yelled all game long at every opposing player brought a broom with the number "5" glued to it. And he screamed at the Cubs all game long. After the game, as the teams were coming out and the Cubs were going to their team bus he started yelling at them again. At one point he took the broom and waved it in hitting coach Richie Zisk's face and taunted him. All of a sudden, Zisk grabbed the broom and threw it on the ground and one of the Cubs started chasing this guy into the parking lot with the broom. Within about 15 seconds there were 15-20 Daytona Cubs (Kerry Wood amongst them) chasing this guy all over the parking lot trying to catch him and beat him with his broom. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

(Don't laugh)... Back in the first weekend of May, the Orioles had taken the first two games of the series vs. Boston and I was going to the game on Sunday, as they were going for the sweep....As I was entering the ballpark, I noticed some Orioles fans attempting to bring brooms into Camden Yards, but they were not even permitted to bring them in the stadium (BTW, the Orioles won)......

I would agree, the broom is reserved for rivalries and games against teams above yours or the equal.

Never below, unless it is a rivalry.

Besides that, Kawakame (sp) was pitching today for the Braves. Whoever heard of a professional pitcher being 0 and 9 and still being there.

Kawakami was signed as a stop-gap to give some of our AA/AAA guys a few more years before we inserted them into the rotation. Management has always intended for Medlen, who began the year as the long reliever, and Venters to be in the starting rotation. With Medlen throwing lights out right now and with Venters already in the bigs as a reliever, I doubt Kawakami finishes the year in the rotation. He will likely take over as the long-reliever when Jurrjens returns from the DL.

  • I've gotta say, I'm impressed with any baseball/sports fan which would consider etiquette whatsoever. Whenever I read a story about a player and a fan getting into some kind of altercation, you can pretty much count on my being on the side of the player. Some Celtics fans brought signs to the NBA Finals stating that Lamar Odom "got the ugly sister," meaning one of those Kardashian girls. Now what do you suppose the odds are that one of those sign holders would walk up to a six foot ten, 230 pound guy and tell him his wife is ugly? Now this is a far greater infraction than taunting a team for getting swept, which I suppose makes it that much nobler that someone would think twice about doing it. Just my two cents...
