What the heck is happening to Chris Berman's voice?

I can't stand Berman's terrible broadcasting.
Is it my ears or television that's playing tricks on me or is Chris Berman's voice going 'gravelly' during each sentence he speaks on ESPN's coverage of the US Open?
The best way I can describe it is if you tried to talk as long as you can without taking a breath. Eventually, your voice gives out and as you try to get out the last words, your voice sounds 'forced' and very gravelly. This is how Berman sounds EVERY sentence!!
