97 Down--1969 Topps Deckle Edge Completed in PSA 8 or Better

35 cards--1969 semi vintage Topps set-can't be too difficult--right? WRONG! The 35-card 1969 Topps Deckle Edge set is an extremely difficult set to complete in psa 8 or better. Actually cards are numbered 1-33 but there are 2 #11s(Hoyt Wilhelm and Jim Wynn) and 2 #22s(Joe Foy and Rusty Staub. About 2 months ago I was sitting five upgrades from completion in psa 8 or better thinking this was another set I was going to get very close on and wait when all-world dealer Steve Novella called and said he had or could get 2 of the 5 cards I needed--the pop 8 Rusty Staub and the pop 9 Bill Freehan. That was great but I still needed 3 very tough cards--the pop 12 Mays(last card in the set), the pop 7 Richie Allen and the pop 5 Hoyt Wilhelm. On the Set Registry I saw that Golf Pro Greg had a second set that was rated quite highly ansd I asked him if he would sell me the cards. As luck would have it he had just put the cards on ebay individually so I bid to win and was fortunate enough to win all 3.

My set now consists of 32 PSA 8s and 3 psa 9s(Tiant--pop 1, Ferrara-pop 2 and Gibson--pop 3). Of the 8s Wilhelm and Felipe Alou are the toughest in the set--each a pop 5--but as I said--a number of the cards are tough and I have been looking for years for some of these. With a set rating of 8.07, my set ranks 2nd on the PSA Set Registry. I will let it rest at this level.

This set represents my 97th set with each card PSA 8 or better and my 41st baseball set.. The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. Set #98 is in my sights. I appreciate the help of all collectors and dealers in helping me achieve my goals.

Jim , way to go , on yet another set. This is a nice , nice set. I have a few of these, but the big dogs are out of my range.

I'm glad that you are still able to climb to the top of the mountain.-- Sonny

PS-- I'm going up to Westpoint this weekend , but will have to try for another time to get together.

WTG JIM ... I am sure we will see #98 by next week!
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

The only thing certain in this life besides Death & Taxes ...... is Dav completing another set in all PSA 8 and Mike Schmidt congratulating him.
Only a couple more to go Marc!! image

Bye the way ...... Congrats Dav on a very tough set.
The 69 Deckles are much more difficult than one would think, especially considering how many were produced.
    Very Nice Job!

    Hey Jim,

I did try and help you complete your 1968 Topps Football Set a little less than a year ago.
You needed one card, I can't quite remember which one it was, but I do remember you rec'd two offers
one from me...... with in a couple hours of each other. I remember you even posted about it thanking me.
So I was thinking of you. image

Anyway, you are almost there at your Magic 100.

Great to set a monumentally tough goal like you have done and actually achieve it.
My hat is off to you!

    Mojorob,

I do remember and when I hit 100 you will be appropriately recognized.

Many of my old friends--Marc, Anthony Nex, Jay Wolt and others have played key roles in my finishing sets.

    Big congrats Jim!

Isn't it time to find that 55T Roebuck to close the set out at 8+?? Seems that it ought to be time for one to come up for sale. GL when it does.
