A family member is taking a vacation to Switzerland.
Anyone have experience bringing bullion( gold ) back on airplane? Limits? Worth the effort/hassle?
First hand knowledge appreciated! Peace, Tim

<< <i>There is no issue carrying less than $10K out/in to the country, but there will probably be taxes on the amount over $800 brought into the country. I don't understand the benefit of buying in Switzerland, how is it cheaper? >>

That's usually the case however in most parts of Asia you can buy 999 gold jewelry at surprisingly low manufacturing costs. A chain that I wear often is 2 ounces of .999, and it cost me approx $1.50/dwt over spot.
It's interesting to watch some people leave the country, in 90 degree hear with collars all buttoned up because underneath they look like

No duty on gold coins but over $10,000 have to be declared

Same with gold jewelry purchased in Italy and the Mid East. Jeweler in Bahrain told me "hands of the craftsman are free." Jewelry I bought was put on a scale and I paid for the weight regardless of how much detail in the craftsmanship.

How do you know that you are getting the full gold fineness? I think I'll stick to gold coins and bars from well known companies.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Cmon Perry, test it. Buy from a reputable seller.
You've never seen counterfeit Saints or various bars?
But of course to each his own

I can authenticate U.S. gold coins quite well but when you buy jewelry in some Asian or middle eastern market, explain how you determine the actual fineness of the jewelry?

Here in NJ where there is a large Indian population in one area of the state - there are many jewelry stores that sell 22kt by weight, and they sell alot of it.
I haven't seen so much gold in one place in many years. Business seems to be booming.
The reason is the local population understands that wealth should be stored in something other than paper promises.....
