Kennedy Half Complete Variety Set, BU & Proof

I have started to add photos to the VDB Coins Kennedy Half Dollars Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof, both on the VDBCoins.com website and the PCGS Registry Set site. Set is now rated #4 All-Time Finest. I have about 15 coins to go! Links are below. I'd appreciate your comments and be glad for you to take a look!

Here's my 1964 Accented Hair, FS-401. Although collected as a "variety," they were actually the first proof Kennedys struck, and redesigned once President Kennedy's widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, asked for the hair to be revised. With practice it gets easy to spot the "curved V" shape in the hair, but an easier pickup point is the missing/broken lower left serif on the I in LIBERTY.



Population is 80 in 68 Cameo, 9 in 69 Cameo. The highest-graded Deep Cameos are 8 in 68.

Here's the 1966 non-SMS





During 1965 and 1966 the Mint was switching from proof sets to the Special Mint Sets and from the 90% silver Kennedys to the 40% silver. The 40% silver 1965-1967 Kennedys in the SMS sets were produced with a modicum of care (if not enough for some of us picky collectors), but the 1965-67 business strikes were being produced alongside the 1964 Kennedy business strikes by the gazillions

The quality suffered as a result.

While a lot of nice 1964 circulation strike Kennedys were saved, the 1965-67 non-SMS coins were little saved at the time, and they are mighty tough issues at the Gem and higher levels, as the PCGS populations demonstrate.

PCGS Population: 53 in 66, 4 finer, including one MS68 "wonder coin" that a friend of ours owns (7/2010).
