Newp: Chihuahua 1/8 Real

Howdy, all. Although I lurk here, this is my first real venture over to the dark side. Just wanted to share this newp…

This little piece of copper arrived this past week. For me this is a dream coin. One of those coins which you wonder if one even exists, and then it comes up for auction on eBay and you have the good fortune of being the high bidder. I’ve been a fan of the early Chihuahua state coppers with the Indian since I first saw an image of one probably 8-9 years ago. A few years ago I started to casually look for them on eBay. One listing was for a killer 1835 ¼ real that was in essentially mint state. Not knowing much about pricing, I sat on the sidelines and watched as it sold for either $300 or $305.

Fast forward to a month ago. I was actually looking at the saved images of the above-mentioned cuartilla and kicking myself for not trying to get it. Then the octavo was listed on eBay. No way. Here was my chance and I was not gonna let this one slip away. I ended up being the high bidder. It took a few weeks to arrive from Mexico. Judging by the scan, I was pretty sure it would be a great coin, but sometimes when you open that package, you are just blown away- and such was the case with this little jewel of a coin.

As often said, “the scans don’t do the coin justice.” The images are the seller’s scans. The coin probably has claims to mint state. It is a beautiful tan color with plenty of luster and traces of flashy mint red in parts of the obverse and especially on the reverse throughout the wreath. I've always been a fan of crude coinage, and the cracks and planchet flaws just add to the charm.

Chihuahua cuartillas are listed fairly often on eBay, but I have rarely seen the octavos. I think I saw an early series octavo listed earlier in the year, but that is all. Kinda strange that the first 1855 octavo I see listed was the high-grade piece of my dreams.

Also, a very big and very belated thanks to Dentuck who posted a thread on Don Bailey’s Mexican state copper book in this thread . I picked up a couple copies and the book has helped me to enjoy the hobby more.

Thats a very nice copper coin, wonder why they put 1/8 reaal on it,
    and not 4 maravedis ?
