Wax vs. Cello vs. Rack Packs

Hey guys now that I made up my mind on 1985 Topps Football as what I am going to break. The decision now is what kind of packs should I buy? What are the advantages of buying wax packs vs. cello and rack packs. Also where are good places to buy unopened packs? Thanks

I'm partial to the '84 set with rookies of Elway, Marino, (I'm a Seahawk fan), Krieg and Warner. I also like action cards. I'd put '81 second because of the Montana and Monk rookies. I also think it was the last or second to last 528 card set and has some pretty good action shots.

  • I like the 86 set, the looks and players; Reed, Smith, Rice, Young, White, etc.

1984 or 1986 topps. 84 has 2 big rookies elway and marino.. and a few other HOF rookies.. Howie long, eric dickerson and darryl green.. and some other semi star rookies roger craig, ricky jackson. 86 also has 2 big rookies steve young and jerry rice.. and a few other HOFer rookies.. reggie white, bruce smith.. and some semi star rookies andre reed, bernie kosar, boomer esiason ans gary clark. 1989 score is also loaded with rookies but demand for this set seemed to go down quite a but over the past few years. 81 has the most upside if you get a gem mint montana but i personally think the cards are ugly and unless you get a montana or monk you arent left with much.

  • Don't forget about '85, while not filled with star power, that Black Border makes those cards pop..

    Best looking set = 1985
    Best rookie set = 1984
    Best value set = 1989
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • Thanks for the opinions guys. While 1984 Topps is the best set for star power I think 85 or 86 would be cool to break because of the tough borders.
  • Depends on if your collecting the Cards or the Price Guide

I collect the cards. My Favorite sets from the 80's?

    Best Design/Looks
1982 and 1984 Topps are the Best design.

If all your after is a high grade Montana from the 81 set, Forget that. Your not going to pull a Gem mint or 9(Very Slim Odds)

The 86 set does have a nice Rookie Crop, but I can't stand to hardly look at them butt ugly green candy cane striped cards. The ugliest of the decade.

Top choices for me based on design, player selection.
1984 Topps (Marino/Elway nice colorful design and NFL logo with strong star power)
1982 Topps ( LT, Lott 2nd Montana. Great design and Color with NFL helmet Logos and Strong Star Power(My Personal Choice)
1985 Topps (Moon , Dent, 2nd Marino & Elway a tough Black Design that is Beautiful in top Condition. Strong Star Power
1987 Topps (Kelly, Cunningham, Flutie, Herschal, Best late 80's design. Good Star Power, Very Affoardable and Underrated set.

  • Ya I really like the look of 82 Topps as well but I think I want to start off with a 396 card set. 87 Topps is a good option as well. I have to think about this.
  • I'm partial to the look/design of the '85 set, myself.

1989 Pro Set. It is a nice big set with a great variety of players, lots of HOF calibre rookies, the best photography of the decade, and a price tag that is quite reasonable.

i really like the 88 topps set. its pretty much worthless but i remember buying tons of packs when i was kid trying to get the bo rookie. i still love that card and like the design of the set. personally i never liked the 85 set. no rookies really except for moon. i think over time this set will lose its value as more and more 9s and 10 pop.. just my opinion though

  • Thanks for all of the opinions now. I dont want to go 89 Pro Set Cheap but 84 Topps is a bit too pricey. I will most likely pick up some racks and wax of 85 Topps and see how I like it.
  • Alright my choice is 85 Topps.

IMHO Rack packs are the best. They are the cleanest and produce a LOT more PSA 10s vs cello or wax. Also IMHO the best place to buy unopened material is here
  • A simple search of past threads would have removed the need for this one.

Are you going to ask BBCE for prices on every box they have then send a message saying that is out of your price range?

I think you made a good choice with 85'. I have always the loved the set. Best of luck with the chase.
  • Alright thanks guys. It isn't very easy to find rack packs but I will be able to look.

I've had good luck buying 85 topps packs from bbce. I've gotten I think, 2 elways, 1 marino, moon, fryer and some others out of maybe 8-10 packs. They've all been pretty clean, havent had any graded though.

Also got a gorgeous montana. Probably the best condition star I've gotten from that set. I bought wax and cellos.

84 topps racks I didnt have as much luck. Bought, 5, 6, 7? but they were mostly the same sequences. Pulled two dickersons and an oc marino.
