What on earth is this thing (Mexican coin, contemporary counterfeit)?

Found this in the World Coin Errors category on eBay, I'm wondering if anyone knows the story behind it. It is so crude I can't imagine it was a legitimate issue from any real government. Is it a contemporary counterfeit, or is it related to some economic or political upheaval? I could see it as being akin to Hard Times tokens inthe US based on the workmanship. I'm also curious if the opening bid is reasonable. The coin certainly has a "coolness factor" for me as a variety enthusiast, but I'd like to know a bit more about it before taking the plunge.

Many thanks,

There are three varieties for these. Two are in silver, reeded and plain edges, the latter being more valuable. The third variety is made of copper which is considered rare. The krause prices from the 34th edition is reeded edge vf/$50, xf/$75 and the plain edge vf/$90, xf/$125.

Fantastic info, thanks for the quick reply. Hopefully some day I can repay the favor over on the US Forum.

This coin is the plain edge variety and it is definitely a nice one! The one on ebay will probably sell for around what the start bid is. I do not know much about these issues, but I am hoping to learn more... Maybe one of the experts will chime in soon.
