Merc Complete Variety Set

WOW. I just did some high powered math while looking through what is required for the set.

104 coins total required.

The year 1945 requires 7 coins....that is what I noticed first. I thought, wow, that's a lot....then I noticed 1941 requires 9! Just between those 2 years...that is 15.4% of the collection. Holey cow!

Do not misinterpret here....I am not complaining....I am excited about the loooong journey I am on. Just something I noticed. If I can just take care of those two years I will make a serious dent in the series. image

Are there any other looooong variety series like this where there are a ton of coins for just 1 year? In the merc series we have a year with 9......is there anything else that tops that?

Happy Collecting!

Greg

Yep, the Kennedys can top that. The Kennedy Halves Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof--The Longest Set, kinda like The Longest Yard--contains 18 BU and Proof varieties, of which I have 15. I still need the FS-104 and FS-106 1964-D, and the 1964 Proof Accented Hair DDO FS-103. Ain't life fun! Good luck!

    Circ Strikes
    1964 1.00
    1964 DDO FS-102 3.00
    1964 DDR FS-801 4.00
    1964 SMS 7.00
    1964-D 1.00
    1964-D DDO FS-101 3.00
    1964-D TDO FS-103 3.00
    1964-D DDO FS-104 3.00
    1964-D QDO FS-105 3.00
    1964-D DDO FS-106 4.00
    1964-D DDO FS-108 4.00
    1964-D/D RPM FS-501 3.00

Here are some of the other "BIG" years for dimes:

    1820 13 coins
    1827 13 coins
    1829 12 coins
    1876 8 coins
    1906 10 coins
    1908 16 coins
    1946 16 coins
    1964 14 coins

These are all business strike coins....no proofs.

Insanity! 1964 JFKs should be a set by itself. I can't imagine the celebration after completing that. I guess the celebration might start with never looking at another 1964 again. image

    16 Dimes in 1908....without proofs...that is nutty!

I will leave those challenges to others I think. image

There are actually more 1908 dimes. That's just the ones PCGS accepts now.

The workers at the mints must have drank their lunch and breaks that year!image

No kidding! They had to be working on a change or screw-up just about every day that year.

The coolest thing about it is, when it's slow at a coin show, I can go through my 90% silver that I buy and occasionally pick out one of the business strike 1964 varieties. Helps pass the time at some of the small shows. image
