I just would like to thank Laura Sperber of Legend Numismatics

RealoneRealone Posts: 18,519 ✭✭✭✭✭
for having the ovaries to say what has needed to be said about the pos coin doctors and how they are contributing to the destruction of our hobby.image

Edited to add please show your support here if you can with a thread that never ends to show that you are behind her and mad as hell at all the coin doctors named and unnamed that are currently still performing their evil science!

And who ever said T-shirts complaining of the coin doctors with the3 monkeys representing the png's dysfuntional response is a great idea.

image for Laura Sperber. She will be remembered as someone who really advocated doing whats right for the hobby. If pcgs and people like laura sperber can get rid of the coin doctors and coin doctor problem I really believe numismatics will enjoy a new golden era and an influx of newer collectors. As it stands now the US coin hobby is unfortunately a cesspool. CLEAN IT UP.......go Laura and pcgs!

I first encountered a coin doctor cracking out and puttying slabbed coins at the Westchester Coin Show in 1988... how many thousands of coins have been ruined in the past 22 years? I think Laura comes on strong at times, but her voice, and PCGS's actions, are a welcome glimmer of hope for our hobby.

As far as I am concerned, she is a loner in this game. I've dealt with her for awhile now and she has always told me things straight-good or not.

    Way to go girl!

I'm proud of her. Even when it would have been easier and more profitable to look the other way, she never would.
  • <<I posted the following in another related thread and thought it would fit in here, as well...>>

After some thought about mark/Coinguy pointing out how sometimes people do not approve of another's action, yet will not do anything to try to stop them...

Many cases throughout history... some quite infamous... illustrate this observation...

I just took a quick look at the roster of the PNG... there are some good folks there... some I know, I like and I respect... so I offer up the following suggestion with some regret...

Sometimes you just have to rock the boat...

Perhaps what is needed, is some form of grass roots boycott of ALL PNG MEMBERS... yes, even the good ones... and they would need to be informed as to why... either clean up your organization or you have tainted your own reputation by association...

Is this a bit extreme? Perhaps... but a kick-back/ wait and see approach usually leads to little or nothing...

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

I support everything she has stated. In fact, it is frightening to read what she wrote. I guess I will keep buying from people pulling stuff out of their safes after 50+ years. Man, this is scary stuff. To think of how many coins could reside in plastic that are far from original?! Ugh. . .

Thanks for having the GONADS PNG doesn't!! You probably have more testosterone than all the dealers at the meeting! It's nice seeing a dealer watching out for the hobby. It would have been much easier to take the other road and look away. You could still maintain your means of living, without possibly jeapordizing your reputation/stature in the coin world community. I doubt if ANY of these scumbag doctors would stop dealing with you over this. They would rather attempt to pass a bad coin if they thought they would make a bigger buck.imageimage

    BTW,

Is Laura still banished from these PCGS message boards? If so, that's a real ironic situation.

I suspect she chooses not to post here as it takes a lot of time and she posts at the Legend web site which most of us know about anyway and it gets referred to and linked to often.

You're dreaming if you think coin doctoring will ever go away completely. It's a kin to counterfieting U.S. Currency. Even with the full might of the Feds, including the secret service and FBI, counterfieting is still happening. The hobby can do things to mitigate the damage, but as long as there is money to be made, then doctors will exist.

While not naive enough to believe it will ever completely go away, I do believe it's a good analogy to a disease. And while it may never be completely extinquishable, it is still prudent to prevent it from becoming a full blown epidemic.

Remember that this coin molesting is due to one thing, and one thing only.....

    GREED.

I also want to congratulate Laura and PCGS for finally taking this step.

The PNG members as a whole are a pathetic group with no backbone. It hurts me to say this as at least one members has sold me a reasonable number of seated dimes over the past 15 years. But greed has to be stopped and the respect for coins we so love restored......

Yes, Laura, thank you very much. I particularly admire your courage to call out PNG. Their wishy washy press release speaks volumes to collectors, and the message is not good.

I do have one suggestion for Laura, however, and for many other dealers. Lighten up on the use of the exclamation point!

At any rate, Laura Sperber is the best!!
