Good Morning Class - Today's assignment is to identify the following coin - We Have a WINNER

Today's assignment is to figure out what coin I am talking about, through
the use of clues, periodically added throughout the day (every 1-2 hours).
Hopefully one of you coin gurus can figure out which coin I am talking about
before the end of the day, so that I dont have to drag this out to Monday!
Each additional clue will lead you closer to the answer, but the clues are still
intended to be difficult to figure out.

This is an open-book assignment, so search your vast numismatic libraries, and
once you think you have the answer, post it here.

I have already PM-ed the individuals who cannot participate in this game, as I
have already told them the answers to the clues! They will also act as my judges.

And begin:
1) I am a silver coin, produced in the U.S. at the Philadelphia Mint
2) I was first discovered less than 40 years ago
3) I have at least 30 known pieces, but will likely never reach 50 pieces
4) I was minted at Ye Olde Mint during the 19th Century
5) One of the most recently discovered examples occurred just 18 months ago
6) I am not well known in grades VF and above, and many of the known examples are damaged
7) It is in the Red Book today, but was not there in 1975!
8)
9)
10)

I know Clue 1 was vague, but it did focus your search to just one mint and one metal type!

    Ok gang, clue #4 posted.

This should REALLLLLLY help narrow your focus on the coin I am talking about!

The following clues wont be as large and helpful, but they will narrow down which coin/type I am talking about

Hey STONE, if "Ye Olde mint" is synonymous with the "First Philadelphia Mint", then the dates we're looking for are 1800 to 1833. Yes? No? image

Yes, it would have been too easy just to give you that date range, and it is more fun to present it the way I did image

I suppose that it could also be a Half-Dime or Dollar - at least from the clues I've presented up to this point!

Ummm, has anyone scanned the population reports yet...you might want to go do that. Just sayin' image

I'm going out golfing in a little bit, and if the correct answer hasn't been stated by the time I get back, I will give you clues 8 and 9 image

Clue 7 is just cruel. I doubt that is going to make the lightbulb come on for anyone....or maybe I could be wrong. WOW! I think it is a dime or quarter....based on what the author of this thread collects....hmmmm.

Nope, but it was a good try.

Oh, and the only reason I stated the 1975 edition was because that's the earliest Red Book I own which fits in the time-frame of the clues given!

Bing, Bing Bing - We have a winner.

    Nice job Nysoto image

And if anyone was interested, clues 8, 9 and 10 were going to be:
    8) I was discovered in Ohio
    9) John McCloskey discovered me (which Nysoto mentioned!)
    10) I am a Dime
  • NysotoNysoto Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have been wanting one of these - thanks for the prize Stone image

McCloskey bought the dime from dealers stock in 1973.

If ya really want one, there's an example hanging out on eBay.
Or, if you're like me, just wait and cherrypick one! image

For DIMES - The 1804 13Star Reverse, 1814 STATESOF, and 1829 Curl Base 2 meet the criteria based on population reports alone....not sure when these other two were discovered though.

Just based on population reports, Half Dimes and Quarters were quickly eliminated from the running.

    Fun game. image

At the 2009 FUN show, this was IMO the Cherrypick of the show: A collector had purchased a small bag of Bust half dimes and dimes from one of the budget dealers, for around $5 or so per coin. One coin was an 1829 Curl Base 2 dime, holed, with VG or so details.

    So keep looking, Winston!

I knew it wasn't this one since there are less than 20 examples known.

Since I have it on eBay, it's probably not that rare and it wouldn't surprise me if ten more show up all of a sudden.
