Any way to rotate coins inside a PCGS slab?

Alltheabove76Alltheabove76 Posts: 1,517 ✭✭✭✭
I just got a submission back today and one of the Peace Dollars is rotated about 30 degrees in the slab. Is there any way to straighten them up? If not, does PCGS charge to reholder these?

Don Willis has chimed in (in past threads) and said that shouldn't happen and to send them back in and PCGS will fix it for free. I recommend calling customer service to see if they will take care of two-way postage too.
Of course, you could tap the slab on a hard surface for an hour or two to get it to move.

I have yet to have one that I couldn't rotate by tapping on a hard surface. Not that there have been many, I think 4. Less than a minute of tapping. My guess is they moved during shipping as easy as they were to move back.
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

    Try angular momentum.That may work.

I tapped it for a few mins on my desk and got it back into place.

Yeah, it has worked for me as well. A few minutes beats sending it back for re-holdering!

I'm sorry. I do not fully understand. I have heard of this in the past. Maybe I am overthinking this, but in what manner do you tap the corner? Do you hold the slab perfectly perpendicular to the hard surface as you tap the corner, or do you hold the slab at a, say, 45 degree angle and sort of wag it, coming at the corner from the side. This is really hard to convey with mere words and is a time when a visual would be better suited.image

  • To turn a coin clockwise in a slab, grab the bottom-right corner of the slab as you look at it with the label showing. Now hold it like you are going to throw a cart with the bottom left corner pointing towards the floor. Now pretend it's a hammer, you dont even have to tap it on anything. Do swift wrist jerks like you are hitting a nail. The slab should move down and up a little in your hand while you do this. I hold mine over the carpet (If it should fly out of my hands) and put a paper towel over the spot where I hold it as the ribbed edge can chew up your fingers a lot over time Some are easy, some are very hard. PCGS will NOT reholder a coin that turns in a slab. They will tell you to do something like the above. To turn it Counter-Clockwise, grab bottomleft corner with bottomright corner pointing towards the floor and repeat....

    Fun Fun....

There are 4 corners on the slab, you will grasp the slab between your thumb and finger.

You tap on the edge corner so as to cause the coin to turn from the impact force. Deceide which way is the shortest distance to move the coin and start from that corner. If the coin goes the wrong way try a different corner. You are tapping on the edge seam where the slab is sealed together.

    I hope this helps?

  • Here is a link to what you can do according to this guy.
I have never tried but more power to you if you want to. I would think it would scuff up the holder and possibly the coin
Coin collecting is the only hobby were you can spend all your money collecting them but you will never be broke
  • That is good to know on both counts.
