Here's my Topps Sakic PSA 7, just for drewsef

Well, I want to thank PSA for getting my order out to me in 1 day.
Here's my disappointment and the card still looks exactly the same as I sent it in. I can't see anything wrong with it.
Scans of the front, back, and top edge corners, and bottom edge corners. All 4 corners are sharp. Can you guys see anything I'm missing? A 7? The greatest 7 in the world.

Is the surface of the card perfectly flat? Are there any indentations of any kind on it?

I've had a few cards that looked perfect, but had slight indentations on the surface. They always came back as 7s.

Really hard to see the surface through the holder, but gliding and rotating the holder under a light, I can't see any indentation. There may be a break in the surface. I hear "break in the surface" a lot. What exactly does that mean? It's smooth then stops? If someone can clarify.

That is really terrible. I can see NO reason why that would not be a minimum of 9. Based on the last sub you posted, you obviously know what you are looking at. Sorry that happened. That really will make me think long and hard about submitting anything for a review.

Yup, those are print dots. None on front.

Regardless, those print dots should not bring the grade down, IMO.

Hmm, from the zoomed-in scan, it looks as if the lower-right corner has a ding.

The lower right corner is sharp. I think cos it's a slight bit
darker on that side of the scan which may give it the illusion which I also noticed after looking at the scan, but it's a sharp corner, no dings. I may have to resub....I dunno anymore.

You guys are a trip. Get 99 out of 100 cards your happy with, 91 of which are 10's, back less than a month, received a day after being shipped, and the one card you don't agree with gets two threads that are worthy of saying WTF? image

It looks like it is definitely worth a resub...

To me it seems like there is a ding in the bottom right corner. However, my eyes are not what they used to be. Did you use a magnification loope?

You need to review the corners and edges under magnicifcation. 1989 Topps hockey paper stock is a lot like 1986 Topps football. To the naked eye, everything may appear perfect, but under magnification, you start seeing tons of chips and loss of the top surface. 1989 Topps hockey is much worse of course. There is a reason why that card is so tough to get in high grade.

They seem to be tough on that card. I also sent one in I thought was a lock 9. Came back an 8.
  • This is a prime example of why instant replay should be introduced
  • You can always break and resub.
  • The card looks slanted in the Joe Sakic banner. I sent in 20 OPC and Topps a few years ago and received only (1) PSA 9 of each. The problem with all the cards I submitted were that they all had small indentations from the machine that cuts them on the surface. Never noticed them before I got back the submission back. This card is located in a bad place on the sheet. This is the money card of the set. Just my opinion.

From what I remember, it appears that there's an excessive amount of black ink in the image. The example posted appears much darker than the norm. Not uncommon, but definitely something that drops MINT grades to NM...
  • goyegoye Posts: 454 ✭✭
On the backside pinkish area, to the left of the S in Sakic, and above the t in weight, 1/2 by 1/2 area? Same discoloration on the left side edge of pinkish area?

Or do I see scanner dust?

Edited to add: Is there a line going straight up from the W in weight through the pinkish and red area's? Like where the edge of the wax would be on the first fold?

Went back and looked at my Sakics... There's way too much black on the front of the image that you posted. It's not a registration issue, but one that almost always results in at least a two grade drop.

Look at the top-left of the N in the Nordique logo on the bottom-right of the card. Looks like a stain or something.

This is why for a small fee PSA should tell you why it is a 7. With the technology that we have these days how hard is it to type a few lines on the cert# page.

Nice catch Steve. I missed it all together. Not only does it look like a stain of sorts, but on that same spot, the surface is like a small hill. Kind of like a reverse indentation is the only way I can describe it. Maybe mixed in with the 2 print dots on the back to get the total.

I had the same exact thing on a 1975 Joe Torre and they gave it a PSA 9 with a PD qualifier.

I have an OPC Sakic from a membership sub and yours looks as good as this one:

    image

Unfortunately, it probably isn't worth resub'ing?

Definitely looks way better than a 7.
